What Makes A Good Fictional Father Figure?

Father’s Day is almost here, and we have plenty of reads featuring fathers and father figures discovering their happily-ever-afters! But what is it about these characters that keeps us invested in their stories? Here are 5 traits a great book dad needs to get us excited about their story.

Protective

Who doesn’t love a protective romance hero who is always looking after his loved ones, even in the most difficult of circumstances. Of course, in the world of romance, fictional fathers get plenty of unique opportunities to truly show how far they will go to protect their families.

In SECRETS RESURFACED by Dana Mentink, Chad Jaggert doesn’t even realize he is the father of private investigator Dory Winslow’s child, but he doesn’t let the risk of taking on a tragic case or the discovery of a secret child get in the way of doing what is right and looking out for his family.

Patient

The anticipation of the happily ever after is one of the many reasons we love the romance genre so much, and having a hero who can patiently work towards a loving relationship definitely makes the reading experience all the more uplifting. As a single father, Dwight Addams not only has to raise his teenage son, but is also working to prove himself to bakery owner Sasha Manning. Watching this relationship slowly bloom as the two get to know each other is what makes SECOND-CHANCE SWEET SHOP by Rochelle Alers such a wonderful read!

Open to change

The unexpected can happen, both in real life and in our favorite books, and being able to handle large changes and while it may take some longer than others, being able to move forward in a loving and supportive way is one of the many great traits we look for in the fathers featured in our romance novels.

A FATHER’S PROMISE by Mindy Obenhaus is a great example of this, as Wes Bishop doubts his ability to be the father his daughter deserves. Once he discovers he has a family, he doesn’t let his self-doubt or past tragedies stop him from taking care of those closest to him.

Enthusiastic

It’s no secret that we have quite a few secret baby stories for you to enjoy on Harlequin.com, but one way to definitely get us excited about a fictional romance father is when he is excited for the opportunity to prove himself when surprised with new additions to his family. That’s why we love QUADE’S BABIES by Benda Jackson, part of the two-in-one FLAMES OF ATTRACTION. Quade Westmoreland is shocked to discover that his passionate night with Cheyenne resulted in three babies! His discovery of fatherhood makes Quade very excited for the prospect of a family of his own, as well as new additions to the Westmoreland line!

Vulnerable

Sure, we all love our strong, protective heroes, but when it comes down to it, being able to be open and honest about your emotions is the key to a long lasting relationship. Which is why we recommend HEALED BY HIS SECRET BABY if you’re looking for a great story involving a hero opening up and embracing his new family. In the latest book by Louisa Heaton, GP Cole Branagh is all about his job, and it’s not until he helps a new nursing assistant become familiarized with the job that he discovers she is the godmother of his daughter! Cole knows he won’t be able to navigate parenthood alone…fortunately, he’s open to asking Lane for her assistance!
