Go Behind The Book: Jo Ann Brown Shares Her Writing Process
Jo Ann Brown gives readers a peek behind the scenes of her latest Love Inspired book with insights on her inspiration, writing process and advice for aspiring writers.
Q: Where did your inspiration come from?
A: The final book in the Amish Spinsters Club series, The Amish Widower’s Twins, came about because I wanted to write a “second chance at love” story, but with a twist: the hero comes back into the heroine’s life with twins that aren’t his biological children. I’m an adoptive parent myself, so I know that loving the children in your life doesn’t have anything to do with whether you gave birth to them or not.
Q: In what way did your original idea evolve as you wrote?
A: When I came up with the original idea, I didn’t know that I’d also be introducing a character dealing with a heart valve replacement, something we’ve recently gone through with my own dad. It felt so good to be able to put our hopes and fears into the characters to allow them to experience them as well. I hope the characters’ emotions come across to readers and convey the feeling of hope for a positive outcome.
Q: What was your favorite part about writing this story?
A: My favorite part of writing this story was working with the little twins. There’s just something so much fun about writing children!
Q: Where do you like to write?
A: I have an office where I’m surrounded by books and memories from places we’ve visited as well as pictures of family. I love to go into my office to shut out my world and enter my characters’ world. I usually write in the afternoon for a few hours and then late at night (from around midnight to 2:00 or 3:00 a.m.). I settled on those hours when I had children at home because it allowed me to work around their school and after-school schedules.
Q: What advice do you have for other aspiring writers?
A: The old standby: don’t give up just because you’re collecting rejection letters. Keep writing and keep learning and keep doing the best you can. The editor who ended up buying my first books had sent me a rejection at first, but she remembered my books when she moved to a different publishing house. She contacted my agent, and we ended up with a multi-book deal.
