Back in Port Del Mar, Texas, for her little sister’s wedding, Gloria Castillo comes face-to-face with the man who broke her heart. They had dreamed of a future together since they were young, but Liam Mitchell ended their relationship after a family tragedy and dedicated his life to helping his widowed mother. Gloria wants to avoid her former love while she’s in town for the festivities, but she needs his help to fulfill her bridezilla sister’s glamorous wedding dreams. With nuptial chaos all around them, can they find their happily-ever-after again, or will Gloria be the one to walk out and never look back?
Liam Mitchell made his way up the plank as the sun touched the sand along the Texas coast. Orange and shades of pink colored the horizon. Most days, he loved this part-time gig and arrived early. How many men had the opportunity to play a pirate aboard a faux Jolly Roger? The Black Dragon was a favorite with the tourists in his sleepy coastal town.
Today, though, old memories were too close to the surface, making him feel out of sorts.
“Hey ho!” Carlos’s greeting pulled him out of his dark thoughts.
He lifted his hand and tried to smile. “What’s on the itinerary today, Captain?”
“Today is a different setup. No minipirates. We’ve been booked for a bridal shower tea party. All women over twenty. So not the normal kids routine.”
Shock cleared his mind. “What? Like grown women gathering for tea? We don’t serve tea.”
Carlos laughed. “They’re having a late breakfast catered. We just have to hang out in our swashbuckling costumes and talk like pirates. We’ll bring the treasure chest out and present it to the bride-to-be. It’s going to be a hoot.” He handed Liam the tablet containing the daily schedule.
As Liam scanned the screen, the name at the top stopped all brain function.
Gloria Castillo. His vision blurred. Gloria was getting married. His Glory belonged to someone else?
He closed his eyes against the hollow feeling in his gut. Not his anymore. They had been together every summer since eighth grade. After high school, they’d headed off to college in New York. She loved the theater and he loved her. Everyone but his mother had been against it, saying they’d be back. But then, two years in—
“Hey! Earth to Liam.” Carlos was waving at him. “¿Qué pasa?”
What was wrong? His stomach rolled. Carlos had moved to Port Del Mar three years ago. He didn’t know their story.
“I’m not feeling well. Who’s on call for backup?”
Carlos shook his head. “Greg is out of town for the weekend. Call the office to see if Selena has someone. But, really, this should be an easy gig with a big tip.”
He couldn’t do it. He wanted her to be happy. He did, but he couldn’t be on the sidelines to watch. Apparently, he wasn’t as selfless as he pretended. He handed the tablet back. “Sorry.”
A frown creased Carlos’s forehead and he peered over Liam’s shoulder.
A clicking of heels told him it was too late.
“Hello! I know I’m early but… Oh, no, I’m losing hold of the box.”
Carlos rushed past him to help the woman behind Liam.
He didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. That voice still talked to him in his dreams.
Sweet, lyrical laughter filled the air. “Thank you so much…”
“Captain Gonzalez at your service. Let me take that for you. When you said you’d be early, you weren’t messing around.”
Liam stifled a groan and the urge to walk away without looking back.
Stiffening his spine, he finally turned. His eyes met her golden amber ones.
“Liam?” The shock on her face had to mirror his.
“Hey, Gloria.” He tried to sound casual. Epic fail.
