3 Reasons to Make a Suspenseful K-9 Series Your Next Read

There’s only one thing that can make a fast-paced suspense story even better: a loveable canine companion. These stories of action, mystery and romance will sweep you into a world of crime and high-stakes adventure, featuring K-9 unit dogs specially trained to solve crimes and save the day. Love Inspired Suspense authors share the reasons they love writing stories about everyday heroes and their protector pets, and why you’ll love reading them!

To fall (even more) in love with pets

Laura Scott: I love dogs in general so writing about them is so much fun. It’s difficult to include pets when my characters are running for their lives, so having a K-9 cop in the story makes it much easier. K-9s are also a good way to lighten a tense suspenseful story.

Valerie Hansen: When I wrote my first K-9 story I got so involved with Labrador retrievers I went out and adopted one! She’d been a prisoner of a breeder and had no name and little socialization. She was afraid of everything. It took a long time to win her trust with the help of Charlie Brown, a chocolate lab I had who was the sweetest dog ever. He was already old by then but he carefully schooled the female I named Lucy and taught her how to accept the love she’d been denied. Charlie is long gone and Lucy’s muzzle is turning gray. She follows me everywhere and keeps me “safe” from suspiciously blowing leaves and marauding delivery men. I told my editor about Lucy when I first adopted her, then followed up with the promise to myself that I wouldn’t bring home another dog for every one I wrote about. It’s a good thing I didn’t, or I’d have a big pack by now. And it would still be growing!

Dana Mentink: Police dogs have a zest for service and an abiding love for their partners that they bring to the table along with their uncanny abilities. It’s so special to be able to write about the unbreakable bond between an officer and their K-9. It makes for a richer story that appeals to readers in a deeper way.

To discover the joy of connected stories

Lynette Eason: The experience of writing books for a K-9 series is very different from writing other inspirational romantic suspense in that we’re writing as part of a continuity, where other installments are written by other writers. It’s different in that I’m collaborating with 5 or 7 other authors for the series. While it can be hair-pulling at times, it’s also a blast and I’ve grown to love the other ladies like sisters. We have a ton of fun and we pray for each other. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

Laura Scott: The best thing about writing the K-9 stories is that I am privileged to work with such a talented group of authors. I have learned so much from each of them. They are simply amazing.

You might just learn something new.

Lynette Eason: I have a lot of things that I really love about writing K-9 stories, but if I had to pick a favorite, I’d have to say I really enjoy the research. Even after writing several of these K-9 books, it seems like I learn something new with each and that excites me.

Dana Mentink: There’s nothing better than writing a story that features a human hero and their amazing canine partner! It adds a whole level of enjoyment above and beyond the regular inspirational romance because it enables the writer and reader to explore the exceptional capabilities of police dogs. Eddie, the drug detection beagle in my book, has 45 times more scent receptors than his human partner Zach (which is perhaps why he is given a bit of leeway when he chews things he shouldn’t!)

Lenora Worth: I love writing about K-9s. They are so dedicated and so brave. Putting a strong hero or heroine with one of these highly-trained and dedicated canines is challenging and I learn something new with each book. They truly are heroes.
