Just One More Episode: Author Kimberley Troutte Discusses Binge-Worthy TV Shows
by Kimberley Troutte, author of Forbidden Lovers
Do you become so invested in a drama playing out on the screen or between the pages that it’s tough to stop? Have you mumbled to your television “Just one more episode…” only to realize five episodes later that your hubby has gone to bed, the kid who valiantly swore he’d stay up with you is snoring on the couch, it’s 2:00 a.m. and you still crave just one more?
I might have a teensy-weensy binging problem. I enjoy being swept away by a great story and hope readers feel the same way when they pick up one of my books.
Binge-worthy television shows and great romances grab us because the characters could be us. They have flaws and strengths, and they love someone so deeply that they’ll sacrifice everything to protect/save them. The conflict they face is life-altering and ratchets up as the story progresses. The plot is both believable and contains great universal truths we humans all understand. The story is us on a tough day.
Here are a few shows I’ve gobbled up:
The X-Files—Life-or-death danger as FBI agents Mulder and Scully—two opposites who respect and support one another—investigate the unexplainable.
Jane the Virgin—American telenovela about a cutie-patootie virginal mother caught in a love triangle.
The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Ozark—I don’t love zombies or violence but do enjoy watching regular people caught up in deadly circumstances and fighting the odds to save one another.
Longmire—A sheriff strives to maintain justice while protecting his family and friends.
The Handmaid’s Tale—Stakes are high as women struggle to survive in this terrifying tale of a society gone wrong. It’s far too easy to walk in June’s shoes.
What are your favorite binge-worthy shows? Why do you like them?
