Working At Harlequin: Editing and Coffee with Katie Gowrie

We’re back with another behind the scenes look at life here at Harlequin. Today, we’re chatting with Editorial Assistant Katie Gowrie as she fills us in on what it’s like working in editorial, the importance of coffee and her encounter with a baby falcon!

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

I need coffee to function, so I usually start my day with a good brew as I catch up on email. 🙂

What does the average day in your role look like for you?

My role as an editorial assistant means I do what’s needed to support my team, so my day-to-day changes constantly. Some days I’ll help with admin tasks, marketing or social media. I could be working on back cover copy or briefing our art team for covers. I love the days I get to edit and read submissions from potential authors, though.

What got you interested in the publishing industry?

Anything that gets me up close and personal with a book! I’ve always had a love for books and growing up I was a big reader (and still am). I studied Journalism in university, thinking I’d go into newspaper and magazine publishing but by the time I finished my degree I knew my true passion was for fiction books.

What piece of information or advice do you wish you knew going into your role?

I’m always enthusiastic to learn and I plan on doing a lot of that still as I continue on in publishing. But I’d tell myself to be ready to multitask and do lots of different things. Being an editor isn’t just about the life cycle of a story but about the book itself, meaning understanding aspects of business, marketing, art and production–from when the book comes in as a slush submission to when it ends up on shelves. Of course, this just makes my day job more exciting and helps me engage with our books more fully!

Tell us a funny story about something that happened while you were at work.

This isn’t so much a funny moment but certainly a memorable work moment came last spring in the form of a fledgling falcon landing on my office windowsill (*squeee*)! Our old offices were right across the street from a falcon nest, so we were used to the falcon family but I’d never seen a baby so close. We stared at each other through the glass (I was gushing, not sure what he or she was thinking), and before I knew it, half the editorial department was in my office snapping pictures. 🙂

What upcoming books are you most excited about?

I work on Harlequin Dare, so I’m constantly excited about our forthcoming titles. I’ve become a fan of the series as I’ve continued working on it, so if you haven’t picked one up yet, I’d recommend it! I’ve been working closely on Rebecca Hunter’s Blackmore Inc. series, and her debut Dare book, Best Laid Plans, comes out in July 2018.

We have one more behind the scenes post for you coming out next week, but that doesn’t mean this series is over for good. Make sure to visit the comments section below to let us know which Harlequin role you’d like to know more about!
