A Tale of Writing and Romantic Suspense
by Deborah Fletcher Mello, author of Seduced by the Badge
Writing has always been a breeze, with stories dancing around in my head faster than I’m able to get out on paper. My particular brand of crazy always plays out on the pages of a book. Writing has often been therapeutic. It’s sometimes calamitous, but almost always the best medicine and the most perfect confection that I could ever crave. Putting words to paper, manipulating sentences and battling with grammar is my addiction, that drug of choice I could never see myself giving up. After God and my children, writing is what I love most in this world.
Since my writing career began in 2003, I’ve been published through Harlequin’s Kimani imprint, writing about my beloved Stallion family. The Stallions—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—are four billionaire brothers out of Dallas, Texas, and writing about the lives and loves of this multigenerational family has been a sheer joy.
It was an astute Kimani editor who misspoke at a romance round table event, saying that I wrote suspense, who spurred me to do just that. I have always loved suspense, stories that had a hint of tension, excitement, maybe even fear. Edgy, hold-your-breath tomes with happy endings. In that moment, I thought, Why not?
On June 1, I will release my first book with Harlequin’s Romantic Suspense line. My new series, To Serve and Seduce, follows members of a Chicago family dedicated to law enforcement. The family is headed by patriarch Jerome Black, the superintendent of police, and his wife, federal court judge Judith Harmon Black. The stories will follow sons Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Davis and Mingus, and daughters Simone and Vaughan, all seasoned veterans in the Chicago judicial system.
Book one, Seduced by the Badge, is the story of Detective Armstrong Black and Atlanta police detective Danni Winstead. Together, they are fire and fire! Armstrong is all about following the rules—his rules. Danni is all blazing temper and sweet temptation. Working with her tests Armstrong’s restraint; trusting her could put them both in fatal jeopardy. It’s a darn good story about two people fighting a good fight and falling in love while they do.
I’m excited to introduce this new family to readers. They embody everything I value and love most. The characters have been haunting, spinning in my dreams when I least expect, anxious for their stories to be told. Writing about them has been the best therapy and I am loving everything about them! I know everyone else will, too!
