Author Backstory: Silver James

Readers know Silver James as a critically acclaimed and award-winning author of paranormal and contemporary romances as well as dark paranormal thrillers, but did you know that she was a state appellate court marshal, an airport rescue firefighter, a forensic fire photographer, a crime analyst and a technical crime scene investigator?

Most people don’t do in five lifetimes what Silver James has crammed into one. When judges or sequestered juries were threatened, sometimes with weapons, Silver was responsible for their security, first as chief bailiff in an Oklahoma district court and later as marshal of the court for the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals. In this role, she supervised security for all manner of trials, including murder cases. When an interest in fire photography turned into a volunteer position as a forensic fire photographer for the Oklahoma City Fire Department, a new career path emerged. Silver became a forensics officer and certified airport rescue firefighter at Will Rogers World Airport. Now Silver found herself photographing plane crashes, and one hot-air-balloon crash, and she was the first forensic photographer on the scene of the Oklahoma City bombing at the Murrah Federal Building in 1995 for which she was awarded the Oklahoma Medal of Honor. After the bombing, Silver was attached to a search-and-rescue team and, if she didn’t know she was an adrenaline junkie before, she realized it when she was trained in rappelling as well as confined-space and swift-water rescues. Silver put these skills to the test as her team’s resource commander when a devastating F5 tornado with wind speeds of 301 miles per hour—the highest ever recorded—struck Moore, Oklahoma, killing 36 people and leaving $1 billion in damage over 38 miles. Silver’s final job before following her calling as an author was as a crime analyst for Midwest City Police Department, for which she cross-trained as a technical (or crime scene) investigator.

It’s obvious that Silver has an abundance of memories and adventures to draw upon when creating her stories. She credits working around men—especially alpha males—with giving her real insight into the way the male brain works. Consequently she’s very comfortable writing from the male perspective. In her previous careers, Silver has seen the worst that can happen to people, and so writing novels that stress the importance of living happily-ever-after is one of the main reasons she chooses to write romances rather than any other genre.
