Go Behind the Scenes With These Character Backstories

It’s always so inspiring to see how authors developed the plots and characters of the books we know and love, isn’t it? Well, today we’re giving you a peek behind the curtain as four authors reveal how they created some of their most beloved characters.

Quinn McBride from Bulletproof SEAL by Carol Ericson

Navy SEAL sniper Quinn McBride is a laid-back Southern boy from New Orleans with charm to spare, but his easy smile masks his past trauma with an alcoholic father and a mother who abandoned them both. His demons call him to the dark side and the idle path his father took to drown his sorrows in a bottle… But when duty to his country and the woman he loves calls, Quinn is able to put his past in its place and be the man his father never was.

Liam Mercer from The Baby Switch! by Melissa Senate

Finding out that your beloved six-month-old baby son was accidentally switched at birth with another newborn? That would shock and scare any parent, including the hero and heroine of The Baby Switch! The news propels these two strangers to marry so that both can keep the babies they’ve loved and reared for six months—and their biological babies. Marriage to someone neither knew yesterday doesn’t come easily to these two…especially because of their backstories.

Liam Mercer, president of his family’s corporation in Wyoming, had one rule for himself: no marriage, no children. But when he discovered he was the father of a newborn who was left motherless, Liam was surprised by how devoted he became as a father to little Alexander. Meanwhile, divorcee Shelby Ingalls had thought her marriage to her baby’s father would last forever—until he abandoned her when she was pregnant.

Atlas Chariton from Imprisoned by the Greek’s Ring by Caitlin Crews

I loved the idea of Atlas Chariton, the hero of Imprisoned by the Greek’s Ring, from the moment he came to me. A tough-as-nails man who came from nothing and built himself an empire—only to have it torn away from him when the heroine accuses him of murdering her cousin, thus condemning him to a decade in prison… When he’s pronounced innocent thanks to DNA evidence, all he wants is his empire back—and a bit of revenge, while he’s at it. Atlas made me swoon!

All characters have backstory, a life outside the book, even if that background doesn’t make it to the pages of the book. At his lowest point, when Quinn thinks he’s killed the woman he loves, he turns to the bottle, just like his father before him. But when he has a job to do, Quinn is able to overcome his past and face his greatest fears head-on. Even Harlequin heroes have their imperfections!
