Author Backstory: Lara Temple

We all know the adage not to judge books by their covers, but the same is true for authors…

Readers know Lara Temple as the author of strong, sexy and suspenseful Regency-era romance novels, but they may be surprised to discover that she has spent most of her life working for financial firms on Wall Street and for high-tech companies.

With a graduate degree in diplomacy and international conflict resolution, Lara seemed more suited to a diplomatic career but when an opportunity arose with a Wall Street firm, she found herself in the towering world of high finance. As a telecommunications analyst, Lara traveled the world, scrutinizing investment opportunities for firms such as Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch. “Working on Wall Street can be terrifying,” says Lara. “People assume greed is the prime motivator but fear is often even more powerful. Everyone on Wall Street dreads that moment you’ve seen in the movies—being marched out of the office holding a box stuffed with their personal effects.” And, although she enjoyed her job and was at the peak of her profession—feted for being the top-ranked analyst on Wall Street in her field—it became clear to her that she wanted to do something different with her life.

As a student of history, Lara knows happily-ever-afters are rare in real life. Soon after moving from her firm’s New York offices at the World Financial Center to help open a new branch abroad, Lara was preparing for her flight to New York the next day when she saw a bank of televisions showing planes crashing into the World Trade Center. With her office just across the street at the World Financial Center, Lara was intimately familiar with the area and feared for the lives of her friends and coworkers. When she finally made it to New York, she barely recognized the place—ground zero was a smoldering wasteland. Each of us harbors the wish to undo all the cruelty in the world and this is one reason Lara writes, so that at least in her stories pain is balanced with joy and love. “When I sit down to write, I never think, I will use this or that experience, but though what I write is romantic fiction, the people I invent are woven out of my experiences and my views of the world and those in turn are a product of everything I have been through.”
