Author Backstory: Deborah Fletcher Mello
We all know the adage not to judge books by their covers, but the same is true for authors…
Readers know Deborah Fletcher Mello as the award-winning author of more than thirty-five contemporary romance novels, but did you know that she is a true renaissance woman, having explored many careers, including those of size model and art gallery director?
It’s been a long-running joke in Deborah’s family that, one day, she will grow up and figure out what she wants to do. Indeed, she has certainly tried her hand at many professions. Deborah has been a size model and retail buyer for a national women’s clothing chain. She has worked as a finance manager for a well-known beverage organization and as a sales manager for a favorite candy company. She has traveled the world as an administrator and IT trainer for a hotel-owning company and been the director of an art gallery owned by a world-renowned artist. When she earned her real estate license, Deborah decided that if she was going to sell homes, she should also know how to build them and became a general contractor, working on job sites with men who questioned why she was there and if she could pull her weight. “The first time I scaled a ladder to the roof of a two-story home with a bundle of roofing shingles on my shoulder was one sweet moment,” says Deborah. “I barely broke a sweat and proved the naysayers wrong.” And she’s not finished yet—she’s only forty apprenticeship hours shy of qualifying for her home inspection license.
Through all of these varied careers there has been one constant—Deborah has been writing since she was thirteen years old. And everything she’s experienced has shown up in her novels at some time or another. Places she’s traveled flavor the exotic locales her characters jet off to and explore. Deborah’s own journey fuels the emotions of her heroines, while her heroes are modeled after men with whom she’s worked. Being open to so many new opportunities and not allowing herself to be afraid to step outside her comfort zone have allowed Deborah to tell such varied and original stories and to create fully realized characters with such veracity.
