Romance Themes That Go Straight To Your Heart
by Marta Perry, author of Echo of Danger
I’m fortunate to have granddaughters the right age to make a trip to see the new live-action version of Beauty and the Beast a necessity. And what a pleasure! It held us rapt for the entire film, including the credits, without a single extra trip to buy more popcorn.
We talked about the story all the way home, and I mentioned that many other books and films have been written on the beauty-and-the-beast theme. And that there are other classic stories that people enjoy again and again in different forms—the favorite romance themes. Older granddaughter, fresh from her ninth-grade English class, immediately said, “Like Romeo and Juliet!” Yes, of course. We talked romance themes and how they might write a new version of the Cinderella story, of beauty and the beast, of Romeo and Juliet—but with a happy ending, they insisted.
They probably don’t realize yet that they love romance, or that particular romance themes will hold an irresistible appeal for them. But we do, don’t we? Lovers from two different worlds is a favorite theme of mine, and it lies at the heart of my new release from HQN Books, ECHO OF DANGER. How much can you trust someone whose life experience and values are very different from your own? Do you dare to love a stranger? If my heroine makes the wrong decision, she may be risking not only her own life, but the life of her child.
What about you? What are the romance themes that never grow old for you, the ones that find their way straight to your heart?
About Echo of Danger:
In peaceful Pennsylvania Dutch country, a young mother discovers a shocking danger—and an unexpected ally
A whisper of a threat looms over widow Deidre Morris. She and her young son have unwittingly become prisoners of her intimidating father-in-law’s power. One wrong step could find her son torn from her and in the hands of the influential judge. But when Deidre collides with an intriguing stranger, the prospect of a new friendship gives her renewed hope…until a devastating murder rocks the quiet community of Echo Falls and Deidre learns first impressions can’t be trusted.
Attorney Jase Glassman’s assignment is straightforward: befriend Deidre, gather incriminating evidence…and allow her dogged father-in-law to take custody of her child. Anything else, including losing himself in her honest charm, will compromise the job he was hired to do. Yet when a murderer ushers danger into the town, Jase’s only instinct is to protect Deidre and her son—no matter the sacrifice.
