Cynthia Eden On Her First Romance Novel and After the Dark
by Cynthia Eden, author of After the Dark
Do you remember the first romance novel that you ever read? I do…I was about twelve years old, and I was wandering through the aisles at my local Kmart store. And as I was wandering, The Asking Price by Amanda Browning caught my eye. It was 1990…I saw the book—and knew I had to read it.
That day was the start of my obsession with romance novels.
As soon as I read that novel, I knew that I had to read more. Harlequin introduced me to a whole new genre—and in their books I found a whole new world. The Asking Price was my gateway book. Soon I was reading paranormal romances and romantic suspense. My shelves were lined with books by Jayne Ann Krentz, Linda Howard and Nora Roberts. I read those books, and I knew what I wanted to do—I wanted to be a writer.
Flash forward many years…I had a full-time job teaching history, but writing still called to me, and I was tired of ignoring its call. I started writing books (yes, some of those books will never see the light of day, but I kept honing my craft). Then, in 2005, I sold my first novel. Since then…well, I just haven’t stopped.
I particularly enjoy writing darker, sexier stories…like my new story from HQN Books, After the Dark. I love twisted villains, and when I can pair a villain off against an incredibly resourceful heroine and a hero to die for (sometimes literally!), I’m one happy woman.
But what about you? Do you remember when you began your love affair with Harlequin? What was your very first Harlequin read?
Thanks so much for checking out my post—and happy reading!
