My grandfather was an amazing storyteller, and he would always say that people had either wings or roots, meaning they were meant to stay put or head off to explore new people, places and things. The trick, he said, was to figure out how to have a little of both. I think that’s why I love writing so much—it gives me the chance to explore new things while also being rooted with the people I love.
Garrett Granger, the hero in my latest HQN, No Getting Over a Cowboy, is definitely a roots kind of guy. He was born in Wrangler’s Creek, Texas, the very town his ancestors founded. He’s a cowboy through and through and loves running his family’s large cattle ranch. But when he reunites with his high school sweetheart, Nicky Marlow, Garrett has to reach beyond what he knows and step out of his comfort zone. He has to loosen up those deep Texas roots a little and do something that takes a lot of courage—he has to learn to trust again. For him that doesn’t mean leaving. It just means letting go and opening himself up to something new, and Nicky is the right woman to help him with that.
So what about you? Are you a roots or wings kind of person? Or are you one of those lucky people who has managed to have both?
About No Getting Over a Cowboy:
There are plenty of things Garrett Granger hadn’t counted on losing—his child to miscarriage, his wife to another man and the family business thanks to a crooked CFO. He also hadn’t counted on moving back to the family ranch, where he’s met by another surprise—former flame Nicky Marlow, who is renting his grandmother’s old house.
Nicky’s been rebuilding her shattered life since her husband’s death two years ago. But Garrett’s timely arrival in Wrangler’s Creek doesn’t automatically make him the missing piece of the puzzle. Even if he does seem to adore her two-year-old daughter… Even if seeing him again stirs up old feelings Nicky would gladly keep buried, forcing her to wonder if moving forward has to mean leaving everything behind…
