Defining a Writer’s Career

by Debra Webb, author of Dark Whispers

As an author of more than one hundred published novels, I’m often asked what book is my favorite or which one is the best example of what I do. The answer is a difficult one. Imagine if you were asked which of your children was your favorite or which one was the prettiest. See what I mean.

As true as it is that I can’t possibly pick just one book and say it epitomizes my writing style, I can absolutely point to a couple of decisions that set the course my career would take. First, it was the decision to write a series. My very first sale to Harlequin Intrigue was the pilot novel for the Colby Agency series, Safe by His Side. For nearly two decades, no matter what else I wrote, readers identified my name with the Colby books. I love the series and am honored that so many readers do as well.

When you’ve written more than fifty books in a series, you realize that maybe what you really love is building a cast of characters who stay with the stories book after book. I, Debra Webb, confess that I adore revisiting the characters I love. A very smart and talented lady, Sylvia Day, once told me that in every author’s career there is a book and/or series that defines her. With all the books I’d written I was certain I had already been clearly defined. But this other series, this other character kept reminding me she was still there waiting for her turn. For years different variations of the Faces of Evil lingered on the shelf. Finally, one day I read through the first book in the series again and I understood exactly what I needed to do. Jess Harris and the amazing detectives in the Birmingham Police Department’s major crimes unit were born.

The Faces of Evil series is very close to my heart and I will be the first to say that it truly does define me as a writer. I am so pleased to be partnered with Harlequin Intrigue to bring brand new stories in the series to you! DARK WHISPERS, coming in September, is the first! If you love Clint and Natalie’s story, don’t worry there are many more to come!

Former homicide detective Clint Hayes has his first client as a private investigator: a fragile beauty he isn’t sure he can trust. An injury has left Natalie Drummond with gaps in her memory, and she sees and hears things that aren’t there. But she’s sure she shot an intruder in her Birmingham mansion. So where’s the body, the gun, the evidence? When it’s clear someone is trying to kill his vulnerable client, Clint appoints himself her protector, working overtime not to fall for her. But someone is dead set that Natalie never regains her memories—or makes new ones with Clint.

    Deb,

The Faces series will always hold a very dear place in my heart! I love Jess, Dan, and the gang as if they are my friends! I was given an opportunity with these books and, more importantly, a very dear friend!

Dark Whispers is another wonderful Faces book. If anyone hasn’t read Envy, please do. It explains the transformations that have happened in Dan and Jess’s lives!

    Congrats, Deb!
