From Manhattan, With Love
by Sarah Morgan, author of Sleepless in Manhattan
There’s nothing I love more than the energy and buzz of a big city, so when it came to deciding on a setting for my new trilogy, New York was a natural choice. Arriving in Manhattan for the first time feels like stepping onto a film set, and I was keen to sprinkle the stories with plenty of the dazzle and glamour that has made the city a favorite with movie lovers across the globe. But there is so much more to New York than the neon lights of Times Square, and as well as taking them to familiar places, I wanted to give readers a taste of a different side of New York.
One of my favorite places in the city is the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden on top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline are spectacular. As I planned my new series I remembered reading an article about New York’s secret rooftop world—lush gardens perched on buildings from high-rise to brownstones, some private, some public. I was intrigued to think that on top of these towering buildings throughout the city, overlooking the busy streets and busy people, lay tranquil oases of calm. I imagined my characters arriving home after a crazy day at work and relaxing in their roof garden, drinking wine with friends while they watched the sun set over Manhattan.
Paige, the heroine of Sleepless in Manhattan, is competent and down to earth; Frankie (Sunset in Central Park) hides her vulnerabilities behind a tough exterior; and Eva (Miracle on 5th Avenue) is dreamy and romantic. They are close friends, and their private roof garden in Brooklyn is a perfect sanctuary (and, of course, the perfect setting for romance!).
Writing this trilogy allowed me to create a fictional world that explores the joys of dynamic, exciting city living and has a warm sense of community and family—the best of both worlds—because, for me, New York is a city where you really can have it all. For Paige, Frankie and Eva, that means bright lights, peaceful rooftop gardens and happily-ever-afters!
Sleepless in Manhattan is out now, and I’m excited to take readers to New York! If you’d like to see some of my visual inspiration for the series, follow me on Instagram and Pinterest.
