The Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction

by Rebecca Winters, author of The Texas Ranger’s Family

Since I’m the mother of four children, I can’t imagine learning one day that their father has been a convicted felon on the run from the FBI for years. Every so often in the news you hear about a situation like that and it boggles the mind. You would think, “How was it I couldn’t tell? Why didn’t I pick up on clues that would have told me something was wrong?”

One such scenario happened here in Utah. The grandparents were having a family party with all their grandchildren when the police arrived to arrest the grandfather. It turns out that years earlier he’d escaped from a prison in Virginia before serving out his sixty-year sentence for murder. He ended up in Utah, got a job under an assumed name, married a woman and had a family of five children and twelve grandchildren. It was an unbelievable story, but true!

I thought about it for a long time before I wrote The Texas Ranger’s Family. Though I tried to put myself in the heroine’s place, I really couldn’t. I could only imagine her thoughts when the Texas Ranger came to her home and informed her of her husband’s history. You’ll have to read the book to know her feelings and find out how she dealt with the kind of news no wife or mother should have to hear.

The ranger has feelings, too! Though he might have seen a lot of crime and evil in his career, he’s not impervious to this lovely woman’s situation. Her ability to handle the news and get on with her life through sheer strength of will increases his admiration for her. And the fact that she has a darling little girl melts the ranger’s heart. Suddenly this case has become personal to him and this woman becomes his top priority, not only because her life is in great danger, but because he can’t deny his growing attraction to her.

Please, you wonderful readers, comment below or email me at rebeccaburton485@gmail.com and let me know if you, too, have heard of situations like this and how they were resolved. As we all know, truth is stranger than fiction! 😄

I just started reading this one. So far so good. I did find myself wanting to go with the heroine on some of her previous emotional journeys instead of hearing her tell about it. Did you consider using flashbacks of some kind? Or, are flashbacks not used in this line?
