Mary Hershberger is searching for true love. But her meddling mother always seems to be in the way. When she attends a local auction alone, she finally meets the man of her dreams—only to land face down in the mud in front of him! Mortified, she runs off before she can speak to the handsome auctioneer.
New to Happiness, Pennsylvania, Ethan Bontrager never expected a beautiful woman to fall at his feet. But when she disappears without a trace, Ethan’s determined to find his Amish Cinderella. With the community’s help, this Prince Charming just might turn Mary into his Amish spring bride.
English and Amish attendees at the Gordonville Fire Company Mud Sale mingled as they hoped to find bargains at the fund-raising event. It had rained heavily during the night, and thick mud covered the ground in areas of poor drainage. Mary Hershberger wore her black rubber boots, so she wasn’t concerned about the mud. She smiled as she eyed the hustle and bustle of her surroundings. She enjoyed the local mud sales. Having donated a quilt to this particular fund-raiser, Mary hoped that the auction would bring a hefty price that ultimately would benefit the fire company. Her enjoyment of today’s event increased with the knowledge that Mam and Sally weren’t with her. She loved her mother and sister, but her overbearing mam would have put a damper on her day, and she didn’t want to worry about her sister Sally having a nice time.
The auctioneer was in the midst of the bidding. Mary moved closer and wondered when her quilt was scheduled to be on display and why these items were being auctioned outside rather than in the building. The current item up for bid was a beautifully crafted wooden cradle.
She moved closer to watch, drawn by the rich, rapid tones of the auctioneer. As she caught a glimpse of the man’s face, Mary blinked, then froze. The auctioneer was the most handsome man she’d ever seen. She didn’t know him. Her heart began to pound as she recognized an opportunity to meet a newcomer to the area.
He’s never met my mother! Finally I have a chance to meet a man without Mam’s meddling!
