Amateur Sleuths Make the Perfect Heroines

Julie Anne Lindsey, author of The Geek Girl Mysteries

It’s no secret. I’m wild for cozy mysteries. I love everything about them, especially the heroines. In The Geek Girl Mysteries, Mia Connors is the ultimate amateur sleuth. She’s brilliant, but awkward. Beautiful, but goofy. She loves her family, but fears her shadow. She’s every woman who faced an insurmountable challenge and won. Her internal drive for justice pushes her into new and often scary situations, but she goes. She always goes, and I love her for it. She won’t give up until she’s cracked the case, and she always cracks me up in the process.

Lisa Q. Mathews, author of The Ladies Smythe & Westin series

I’ve been a big fan of cozy mysteries and female sleuths since I speed-read my way through the Nancy Drew series. I even got a job editing Nancy Drew books when I grew up. But there was one thing that bugged me about the perfect girl detective. She was just a little too flawless. Maybe that’s why I created my twenty-something, party-girl sleuth Summer Smythe, who sometimes acts before she thinks. Luckily she finds a great partner in her seventy-something friend, Dorothy Westin, who could give Jessica Fletcher a run for her magnifying glass. Summer and Dorothy are definitely an odd-couple detective duo, and they make a lot of mistakes along the way. But when they pool their talents, the Ladies Smythe & Westin are a perfect team!

Do you love female amateur sleuths, too? What’s your favorite kind of heroine?

A Geek Girl’s Guide to Arsenic, The Geek Girl Mysteries, book 2

geek girl's guide to arsenicIt’s been three months since Jake Archer rolled into town, accused Mia Connors of murder and stole her heart. She hasn’t heard from him since. So when a man collapses at the fall Renaissance Faire, she’s surprised to see the US marshal arrive on the scene. And shocked when he points the finger at her—again. Mia would sooner be able to resurrect the poor fellow than poison him.

Jake Archer’s career has been rising fast, but it’s about to come to a crashing halt. The Ren-Faire victim was in protective custody—Jake’s custody—and they were painfully close to nabbing a major crime boss. If Jake doesn’t solve the murder soon, he’ll be fetching doughnuts instead of protecting his nation. A difficult enough task without the alluring Mia Connors in the way.

Working with Jake to catch the killer might push Mia into crazy-cat-lady territory. But with a murderer on the loose—and Mia’s reputation on the line—they’ll have to work fast to find the killer before the killer finds them.

Permanently Booked, The Ladies Smythe & Westin, book 2

permanently bookedThe first rule of book club is don’t talk about the murder.

Semi-reformed party girl Summer Smythe is finally feeling at home at the Hibiscus Pointe Retirement Community. All that’s left to do is replace her late grandma’s massive book collection with a giant TV. Donating them to the community library is the perfect solution—until she finds the librarian buried in books. Literally.

Summer and her sleuthing partner, longtime resident Dorothy Westin, can’t imagine who would want to kill poor, dedicated Lorella. Soon they’re on the case…and the Hibiscus Pointe Book Club is the perfect cover for their investigation.

A murdered librarian is headline news in South Florida, and even outsiders, including an oddball professor and a pair of dueling authors, are eager to join the once-dull group. But one menacing member has Dorothy and Summer bookmarked for the morgue. If the Ladies Smythe & Westin don’t nab the killer fast, the Hibiscus Pointe Book Club may be reading their obituaries next.

See how Summer and Dorothy first teamed up in Cardiac Arrest.
