Love is in the Air with The Fortunes!
by Stella Bagwell, author of Fortune’s Perfect Valentine (The Fortunes of Texas: All Fortunes Children, Harlequin Special Edition)
Valentine’s Day! What woman can resist candy hearts, flowers, wining and dining, and passionate romance with the man of her dreams? Certainly not me! And definitely not the women of the Fortunes of Texas!
As a young girl, exchanging cards with my friends, eating candy hearts with the words Kiss Me or Be Mine, and dreaming of finding a Prince Charming of my very own, made Valentine’s Day special for me. But in those rosy dreams, I never imagined I would someday grow up to write romantic stories of men and women falling in love and finding their own fairy tale endings. And even more impossible to imagine that eventually I would become one of a group of privileged authors to write about a family who’s endured for many years and been loved by countless readers.
I first met the Fortune family back in 1999 when I was invited to write The Heiress and the Sheriff for a series called The Fortunes of Texas, which was published in 2000. To say I was thrilled to get the invitation is an understatement. I was floating on a cloud! On the other hand, I was terrified! Continuities were rather new back then and I’d never worked closely with other authors before. What if my characters didn’t blend in? What if I ruined a character for the author before or after me? Thankfully, once I jumped into the job and began to learn all about the Fortune family, all my fears flew out the window. I was immediately hooked on the characters and the intertwining problems they were facing and, happily, the readers became thoroughly hooked on them, too!
In 2005, I had the wonderful opportunity to revisit the Fortunes when I was asked to write In a Texas Minute, which was a Fortunes of Texas: Reunion book. Wow! What fun it was to go back and revisit a family that was still going strong and growing with each passing year. Now, here I am, celebrating the 20th anniversary as part of the team of authors writing the All Fortune’s Children series, and I can truthfully say I’m just as excited to be a part of this fabulous saga as I was all those years ago.
As an author, being a link in a series made up of several authors isn’t always easy. There’s so many little details about characters and story lines that all have to flow and remain constant. Just when you think you have it all worked out, you don’t, so the collaboration begins all over again. But the process is also lots of fun and I’ve made many great friends while working on the Fortunes. I feel extremely honored to be a part of the team of wonderful authors and editors who’ve made this series so beloved and so special.
Here’s to the next twenty years of Fortunes! And Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Tell that to Vivian Blair, however. Wes’s longtime employee with the earnest heart has complete faith that her app will work. So when she and Wes are challenged to use My Perfect Match themselves, it’s game on.
