Shapeshifters Get Around!
by Linda O. Johnston, author of Canadian Wolf (Harlequin Nocturne)
Alpha Force is back, and I’m delighted!
They’re my covert military force of shapeshifters for Harlequin Nocturne, and this time, in Canadian Wolf—the seventh Alpha Force story—some of them are leaving the country for a while to help train Canadian shapeshifters who want to form a similar covert team.
Why do they want to do that? Well, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are faced with a very difficult situation: a series of serial kidnappings of high visibility corporate executives or their family members. The kidnappings must be stopped, fast—and if the RCMP has to resort to something unusual to do it, they will.
In this case, they’ve contacted Alpha Force as well as recruiting some Canadian shifters into a new RCMP unit. Alpha Force has agreed to supply some of its very special shifting elixir that allows shifters to change at will and keep their human cognition. It has also agreed to send some of its members to help the Canadians learn how to use the elixir via demonstrations and otherwise.
It’s under these circumstances that Lt. Selena Jennay, a shifter who’s relatively new to Alpha Force, and Sgt. Major Owen Dewirter, an experienced member of the RCMP who isn’t a shifter, are thrown together to ensure that the new Canadian Alpha group is formed and trained correctly. Owen has personal reasons not to trust shapeshifters, and Selena has reasons of her own for not wanting to become emotionally involved with non-shifters. They fight their attraction to each other, yet…is it irresistible?
So now Alpha Force is expanding its reach, which is great fun for a writer/animal lover like me. Each Alpha Force member has a cover animal that looks like he or she does while shifted, just in case they’re spotted at inopportune times. Of course most shapeshifters in the world I created must shift during full moons and not keep that human cognition of theirs—which is why Alpha Force members use that very special elixir.
Can you imagine what additional powers our real military forces would have if they could go undercover anywhere appearing like animals? I can, which is why I invented Alpha Force. And now my wonderful military unit is going international.
As I said last time I blogged here, too bad it’s only fiction.
Or is it?
About Canadian Wolf:
Sergeant Major Owen Dewirter lives every day with the guilt of having let a shifter hurt one of his own. Now he’s being forced to work beside Alpha Force newcomer Selena to train a new covert unit of shifters for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and stop a rash of serial kidnappings. Can Owen ignore his prejudices—and his fantasies—about his sexy new partner and do his job?
When their passion ignites in the remote Canadian woods, the tension between Owen and Selena puts the joint mission in jeopardy. Can they learn to trust each other while tracking the enemy? Or will a cunning foe lure them into a dark and deadly endgame?
