The Unforgettable Experience of Writing A Royal Amnesia Scandal

by Jules Bennett, author of A Royal Amnesia Scandal (Harlequin Desire)

Do you love a good amnesia story? As a reader, I eat up this plot. As an author, well…I’ve always run fast and far. There has been this crippling fear that if I attempted such a popular theme, I wouldn’t do it justice or even compare to the amazing amnesia stories already out there.

I have no idea what prompted me to give in and push my fear aside, but apparently when I was plotting, my mood was in the right place and I dove head first into this amnesia plot.

The first question I asked myself: How can I make this stand out?

I had to dig deep for motivation. And when I say deep, I mean circa 1987 and one of my favorite movies, Overboard. Hilarious movie, one I can reenact and quote on a whim. I love how Goldie Hawn is so high on her self-built pedestal, looking down on the world as if they owe her something. Watching her tumble into reality with “real people” is so entertaining and brilliant.

Oftentimes Desire heroes need to be knocked down a peg as well, so I knew I needed an Alpha male who thought he was invincible. I do love to prove them wrong. But, then I opted to throw in his royal status as a prince, toss in another trope of the heroine being his assistant and I knew I had the perfect recipe for a beautiful romance.

Luc is a bit…hmmm…we’ll call him stubborn and prideful. He’s misunderstood since his ex-fiancée jilted him and he’s off to lick his wounds in his newly purchased beach house. Poor baby.

Kate is also at the beach house, as she’s staying in the guest cottage so she and Prince Luc can continue to work. After they have a heated argument filled with sexual tension, Luc slips on the wet dock and hits his head. When he comes to, he believes Kate is his fiancée.

Stunned, Kate doesn’t want to go along with this plan, but she’s had a slight infatuation with her stubborn boss since they were children—they have a slight past. But when Luc sees Kate, he recognizes her and in his mind, he’s still engaged.

Per doctor’s orders, Kate doesn’t feed him any information. The doctor believes it’s best to let the memories come back naturally.

Well, this certainly leaves Kate in a bind. Granted some women would love to be tucked away in a private beach house with a man who’s ready to worship them. But can Kate play the part of doting fiancée? What happens when Luc is ready to make love?

I ran away from the amnesia trope for too long. What on earth was I so afraid of? Writing this story was definitely a treat. The characters were fun, the story seemed to fall into place and I didn’t pull my hair out! A win-win.

A Royal Amnesia Scandal may be my first amnesia story, but it definitely won’t be my last.

My question to you is, have you ever been afraid of something, then once you gave in and tried it you realized there was no reason for concern? I’d love to hear your experience!

About A Royal Amnesia Scandal:

9780373734016She’s about to have an unforgettable affair…with her royal boss.

He was desperate to forget a broken engagement…until an accident has Prince Lucas Silva forgetting his fiancée’s identity. Now he believes his loyal assistant, Kate Barton, is his bride-to-be. And she’s under strict orders to keep up the pretense.

Playing the role of beloved is no stretch for Kate; she’s had a crush on her boss for years. But palace rules prohibit royalty from mixing with the help, so Kate knows her happiness can’t last. Once Luc regains his memory, she could very well be tossed aside…unless the prince is willing to forget the rules, too!

First, I feel like I’m stalking you around the ‘net!
Second, going to the very first Reader and Author Get Together was scary! I hadn’t read a lot of romance, just that I liked to write it and wanted to be around others, and then sitting alone on the brick wall outside the tiny room (which is now where the book fair is) I met the loveliest people. Not so scary after all.
