Friday Night Movie: The Adjustment Bureau
At first glance it may seem unusual to see The Adjustment Bureau on our list of romantic Friday Night Movies. After all, it is based on a short story by science fiction author Philip K. Dick and is categorized as a sci-fi/thriller, but love is at the core of this film.
The movie starts with David Norris (Matt Damon) preparing to make his concession speech after losing an election for the Senate. While waiting for his cue, he meets ballet dancer Elise (Emily Blunt) in the men’s washroom—she’s hiding from security after crashing a wedding in the same hotel. After giving David some much-needed real talk—and a kiss—David gives the most honest speech of his career and possibly earns another shot at making the Senate. But Elise disappears and, not knowing her name, doesn’t think he’ll see her again.
A month later though, he runs into Elise on the bus and gets her number…but what David doesn’t know is that he’s being tailed by a group of mysterious men in hats, including one who was supposed to stop David ever meeting Elise again. They have a Plan for David—one that doesn’t include Elise.
It wouldn’t be much of a romance if David doesn’t encounter Elise again, though the titular Adjustment Bureau will do whatever to keep them apart. But David isn’t ready to lose the woman he loves and begins a fight against Fate itself to change he destiny and be with Elise.
And if that’s not a romantic quest, what is?
