Top Ten Reasons One Cut Deeper Features a Dog

by Joely Sue Burkhart, author of One Cut Deeper (Carina Press)

About two and a half years ago, we brought home a puppy we finally named KoKoKoNa (Koko + Kona Bean) aka my three monsters couldn’t settle on a single name so we call her a lot of things, KoKo, Bean, or mostly just Puppy. She was immediately interested in my writing process.

1.

Remember when I was just a baby?

“Your book is about dogs, right, Mom? When can I read it, huh?”

Me: “When you’re older.”

2. A king shepherd named Sheba showed up in One Cut Deeper and became a huge part of the story. KoKoKoNa was quite excited.

“Are you done yet, Mom? How about now?”

3. Of course, I was writing a romance, with PEOPLE, not dogs, but KoKoKoNa thought she could bribe me into adding more dog scenes by doing tricks.

Get my tail, get my tail…

“I bet your silly humans can’t do this.”

4. KoKoKoNa insisted that the dog in the book had to be well trained.

5. But she wasn’t happy with just a “token” dog. She begged me to give Sheba a very important role.

I’ll even crawl on my belly for a treat.

“I’d crawl on my belly for more dog scenes!”

6. She got pretty impatient with me while I worked through all the revisions.

Let me in! Let me in! Let me in!

“Let me read it! Please! Now! I wanna read!”

7. Finally, I was done with the book!

Mine mine mine mine!

“Mine! Mine! Mine!”

8. KoKoKoNa dug in and quickly singed her ears off.

WHAT DO YOU WRITE?!?!

“You write WHAT?!?!?!”

9. But each time she read a Sheba scene, she was like, “Oh, yeah, baby. Yeah, that’s so good.”

If at first you don’t succeed, try another way to get your tail.

10. When she finished the book, KoKoKoNa laid down an ultimatum. “This is what I’m going to do to your other books that aren’t about dogs.”

I guess I know what happened to that book I accidentally left on the couch the other night…  Thankfully, she hasn’t figured out that (non-dog) books exist on my Kindle.

Guess I’ll be writing more dog characters in the future!

About One Cut Deeper:

{8A2EC1D4-B85E-441D-94DD-C135B0C417FA}Img100 (1)Her needs are dark. His are dangerous.

Charlie MacNiall has been bringing his beautiful king shepherd to the vet clinic where Ranay Killian works for the better part of a year. She doesn’t realize he’s been slowly wooing her. She certainly has no idea that he picked her deliberately—that she is to become his. A broken heart and a desperate desire to be dominated make her the perfect victim.

His perfect victim.

Charlie fixes Ranay, testing her emotional limits while pushing her sexual boundaries past anything she’d imagined possible. Pain is their shared pleasure…until Charlie disappears and Ranay is all but destroyed.

The FBI says the man she loves is a serial killer. Ranay can’t deny there’s a darkness in Charlie, a monstrous hunger that drives him to the brink. She even believes he could kill. But Charlie’s hunger is what bonds them—it’s the foundation of their love. Would he actually kill her?

Joely Sue Burkhart has always loved heroes who hide behind a mask, the darker and more dangerous the better. Whether a cool, sophisticated billionaire, brutal bloodthirsty assassin, or simply a man tortured by his own needs, they all wear masks to protect themselves. Once they finally give you a peek into the passionate, twisted secrets they’re hiding, they always fall hard and fast. Dare to look beneath the mask with delicious BDSM in a wide variety of genres with Joely on her website, www.joelysueburkhart.com.
