Babies, Candy Canes and Chaos

by Tina Leonard, author of The SEAL’s Holiday Babies (American Romance)

I write about them all the time! Years ago my doctor had told me it would probably be difficult for me to become pregnant, so I was thankful to be blessed twice.

Having a big family is part of my life. Mine is so large it’s almost overwhelming at times. Even my kids get confused about who is related to whom. And we’re definitely not the Waltons or Father Knows Best! We’re far more chaotic, which feels quite normal to me.

My married life started off with my taking my new husband home to meet my family in Tennessee. We were staying at my grandmother’s for Christmas. My family is very different from my husband’s, which is controlled and quiet (although they have their not-quiet moments, too)!

My new husband was sitting beside me on the sofa, with my father and brothers gathered around watching TV after the holiday meal. Suddenly, he jumped up and began gesturing wildly. It was because something was occurring that would never have happened in his more elegant family home—my grandmother’s wild-eyed cocker spaniel had ripped the Christmas turkey off the table and was devouring it on the floor. We ran over, and because this dog was known to bite, I jammed the china platter between the dog and the turkey, and my husband rescued the bird.

That was our first Christmas together. Family and tradition, and the two of us joyfully expecting our first child in four months. And, of course, the battle for the Christmas turkey!

You see where I’m going with this baby/holiday reminiscence. It’s probably no surprise that I write about babies and family so much. When I first thought about writing my Bridesmaids Creek series, it was the babies I thought about first! I wanted to know more about a small community that thought they were one big happy family—with a few bad apples, of course! Family and holidays, so much a part of my happiest memories, naturally led to THE SEAL’S HOLIDAY BABIES. In February we’ll revisit our man-loving, woman-run Texas town in THE TWINS’ RODEO RIDER. I hope you’ll enjoy visiting Bridesmaids Creek, where nothing ever goes as planned, yet somehow has the happiest, most magical of happily ever afters!
