Writing from Experience
by Karen Whiddon, author of A Secret Colton Baby
Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve wanted to be around horses. I read every book I could find on them, from Black Beauty to Misty of Chincoteague. I also purchased books on owning horses and avidly devoured them. My folks let me take riding lessons, though we couldn’t have a horse on our wooded acre in the Catskill Mountains town of Woodstock.
Finally, my dad was transferred to Colorado and my parents promised I could have a horse. We moved; I took riding lessons and bought my first horse, a half Arabian named Zotar. By the time I was eighteen, I’d had three horses and shown successfully many times. I had actually hoped to make a career in horse training and riding instruction, but my parents’ divorce and a move to Texas sent my future along a different path.
When I was asked to write the first book in The Coltons: Return to Wyoming continuity, I rejoiced. First up, I love Wyoming, love horses and lived several years in Boulder, Colorado, which is not that far from Cheyenne, Wyoming, so I’m familiar with the landscape.
And my heroine was someone I knew. Because I too know the utter terror and feeling of helplessness of having a stalker. In my case, I knew my stalker intimately. How much worse for Ellie Parker, to have no idea who is stalking her and why? Even when she gives up everything she’s ever known and escapes to a remote ranch, somehow her stalker manages to find her.
I also knew Theo Colton—or men like him. My teenage years were spent around cowboys and horsemen, and I know how addictive the atmosphere and lifestyle can become. Especially when, as Theo was, you’re at the top of the game.
Exploring how life has a way of handing people a different future than the one they’d imagined was fascinating—and fun. Especially since that happened to me. Add in all the other plot elements that were necessary to the continuity, and writing this book became an exercise in escapism for me. I fell in love with my hero and heroine and the various members of their families.
Since A Secret Colton Baby is the first book in a three-book series with the second and third books written by the awesome New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and always-entertaining C.J. Miller, you’ll have to continue to read to learn what happens to several of the ongoing threads, though each set of heroes and heroines will have their own happy endings, of course!
About A Secret Colton Baby:
Is Theo Colton the father of a baby dropped at his doorstep by a dying socialite? Even more shocked than the sexy bronc-riding champ is his beautiful cook, Ellie Parker. Just as she becomes the baby’s nanny, she discovers a terrifying stalker has followed her to Dead River.
What’s worse—as a mysterious virus quarantines the town, danger goes viral, too. But to Theo and Ellie, the biggest dangers are their sizzling attraction and profound new feelings. Can Ellie tame the cowboy who wants nothing more than a wild ride with women? Or must she deny her heart to save his life?
