The Evocative Nature of Places, Sounds and Scents
by Chantelle Shaw, author of Billionaire’s Secret
The members of the Chatsfield family are renowned for their scandalous behaviour and none more so than Nicolo Chatsfield—the black sheep whose outrageous antics made even his wild siblings seem like saints! Once the darling of London’s social elite and dubbed a hero by the press, Nicolo devoted his life to the pursuit of pleasure and strove to forget the terrible fire at The Chatsfield Hotel in which he was badly burned.
But eight years ago he suddenly dropped out of society and retreated to the family’s crumbling Victorian mansion in Buckinghamshire with his wolfhound Dorcha as his only companion, and a new mission—to make a fortune on the stock market.
Sophie Ashdown is intrigued by brooding Nicolo. His dark good looks remind her of a Byronic hero, but she is less impressed by his surly nature. She realizes she will have her work cut out trying to persuade him to attend The Chatsfield shareholders’ meeting that her boss, the new CEO, Christos Giatrakos, has called. Failure is not an option for Sophie. As a teenager she survived cancer, and she won’t let anything beat her. But while staying at Chatsfield House she starts to uncover the real Nicolo, and understanding his pain helps her to come to terms with the secrets from her own past.
Both Sophie and Nicolo were deeply affected by events that happened in their childhoods, which they associated with the loss of a parent. In Nicolo’s case his mother disappeared, and Sophie was devastated when her father had an affair and left the family. Listening to piano music reminds her of happier times with her father, and Nicolo feels close to his mother when he sits in the garden she created.
Places, sounds and scents can be so evocative. Is there a piece of music or a special place or smell that reminds you of an event or person in your life? (Sweet peas remind me of my mum because she grew them in her garden for my wedding bouquet.)
