Love Babies? + Giveaway!

by Dani Collins, author of An Heir To Bind Them (Harlequin Presents)

web-14I do! I’m one of those people who stops new moms in the grocery store and talks to their infant as if the baby can understand me. If I know the mom well enough, I snuggle and nuzzle and practically eat their newborn alive. Babies are yummy.

So I totally get the appeal when they appear between the pages of a book. Not only is it the perfect way to take us back to when our own children were tiny—without the sleepless nights and diapers—but watching an alpha male struggle to find the nurturer inside himself is like watching that old cartoon where the aggressive dog is faced with the wide-eyed kitten. Innocence defeats him and he puts up with the kitten shredding his back and using him as a mattress. It doesn’t get any better.

I won’t call my hero from An Heir To Bind Them, Theo Makricosta, aggressive. He’s more like a tightly disciplined German shepherd. Nothing will knock him off track. Kittens are to be glanced at and dismissed as non-threatening. His sister has been plunking his nephew in his lap for a year, but he doesn’t really grasp that he has developed a relationship with the tyke.

As I wrote the book, I realized I needed a bigger arsenal to break through his shell.

If you’ve been following my Makricosta series, you’ll know that Nic from No Longer Forbidden? married Rowan and adopted Evie. In More Than a Convenient Marriage?, Nic & Theo’s sister, Adara, had Androu with her husband Gideon. In An Heir To Bind Them, we learn that Adara has been trying to reunite the four siblings—they have a younger brother, Demitri—but as Theo arrives on Gideon’s ship in the opening scene, they are being taken over by pirates. Theo takes off with Androu and Evie in his helicopter, but he knows before he even makes it to shore that he is completely out of his element. A one and two-year-old are completely beyond his scope of competence.

The need to ask for help is the first crack in his shields. Turning to the woman who already saw him at his low point, Jaya, is a desperate act born out of a desperate situation. I mean, he’s got two babies to look after here.

Oh wait. Is it only two? Or was there a small and adorable consequence to his one hot night with Jaya eighteen months ago?

Poor Theo winds up faced with a litter of kittens. Given his past, the very last thing he’s ever wanted was to be a father, but guess what? He is one. And boy does this man squirm as all these babies work their way under his hide.

Do you love alpha heroes with babies? Why do you think stories with babies appeal to so many readers? Please comment below and I’ll draw for a signed copy of An Heir To Bind Them.

About An Heir To Bind Them:

9780373132546Off the boss’s payroll…and into his bed

Jaya. Her name reverberates around Theo Makricosta’s head in time to the whirring blades of his private helicopter. He must find her; only Jaya can help with the care of his infant niece and nephew…. It’s not because he hasn’t stopped thinking about the single night of mind-blowing passion he shared with the exotic beauty.

Jaya Powers couldn’t refuse her gorgeous millionaire Greek boss when she worked for him, and she can’t refuse him now! Only this time she has a secret. Their night together had consequences that will change Theo’s perfectly ordered existence forever!

EXCERPT:

“There’s not a woman in the world with enough training to fix me. Don’t try.” Another warning, his tone a little cooler.

She shook her head. This was about fixing herself, not him. “I just keep thinking that if I leave without kissing you, I’ll always wonder what it would have been like.”

That sounded too ingenuous, too needy, but his quietly loaded, “Yeah,” seemed to put them on the same page, which was remarkable. He stared at her mouth and hot tingles made her lips feel plump. She tried to lick the sensation away.

His breath rushed out in a ragged exhale. He loomed closer, so tall and broad, blocking out her vision, nearly overwhelming her. But when his fingers lightly caressed her jaw and his mouth came down, she was paralyzed with anticipation.

There’d been a few kisses in her life, none very memorable, but when his mouth settled on hers, unhurried and hot, she knew she’d remember this for the rest of her life.

The smooth texture of his lips sealed to hers. He didn’t force her mouth open. She softened and welcomed his confident possession, weakening despite the nervous flutters accosting her. He rocked the fit, deepening the kiss so she opened her mouth wider, bathed in delicious waves of heat. Their lips dampened and slid erotically. His tongue was almost there, then not, then—

He licked into her mouth and she moaned, lashed with exquisite delight. This was the kind of kiss she’d only read about and now she knew there was a reason they called it a soul kiss. Her hand went to his shoulder for balance. She lifted on her toes, wanting more pressure, more of him settling into her inner being.

With a groan he slid his arm around her and pulled her tight against him, softly crushing her mouth while digging his fingers into her bound hair. It was good, so good. She reached her arms around his neck, loving how it felt to be kissed and held so tightly against his hard chest and—

He was hard everywhere.

Like hitting a wall, she pushed back, perturbed by how intensely she had been responding and the dicey situation she’d put herself in.

He didn’t let her go right away, kind of steadied her first while staggering one step himself, then he ran a hand through his hair and swore under his breath. “Hellfire, Jaya. I suspected it’d be good, but I didn’t know it’d be that good. Are you sure you don’t want to spend the night?”

    Hi Sandra,

Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary! Especially to a confirmed bachelor, lol! Good luck with winning the book. 🙂

Mary Anne, congratulations on having one child with the sense to give you at least two grandchildren. My daughter is only 18 so I’ve given her strict instructions to wait a little longer before blessing me. But I’ll be visiting my one and three year old niece and nephew in Oz this year. I’m looking forward to that.

Thank you everyone for commenting. I’ll be writing tomorrow and wild drop by when I come up for air.

    Best,
    Dani

    Hi Signi and Vicki.

I love hearing people say, “I still love Harlequin.” I think that’s their special appeal and why they call it the ‘Harlequin Promise.’ You always know you’ll get a good read and sometimes the story completely rocks your world.

Vicki – 2 months old is like the ripest most squishiest and edible of ages. Oh they smell so good! Enjoy every second because they grow so darned fast.

Babies are just adorable. How can anyone not love a baby? They may resist at the beginning but eventually, they do warm up to the babies.

    Hi bn100,

I guess we all have our weaknesses for different things. For some people it’s cowboys. Others like bride stories. I like those fine. Do you have a favourite trope if not babies?

Kai, I agree with you on babies being adorable. Doesn’t even matter what species, right? The homeliest animal still makes a cute baby 🙂

Stories with babies usually help the hero wake up to his vulnerable side which is so appealing.

I love alpha men with babies. It’s fun to see a self assured, hard man being melted by a little baby.

Babies draw out another side of men (and you can’t see too many sides of a man, LOL)!
