Too Cute Kittens and Being A Really Cool Cat Lady
by Rebecca Hunt, Nonfiction Editor and Lauren Jackson, Associate Publicist
I knew I was a crazy really cool cat lady my first day of Kindergarten when I was introduced to my teacher, Kitty, who wore cat-themed jewelry every day and like me, was obsessed with cats.
Today, I don’t wear any cat-related clothes or accessories, but my affinity for felines is as strong as ever. I love all animals, and as a full-grown grown-up, I am lucky enough to work on books about animals for a living. They pay me to look at pictures of puppies, to find the next cutest animal meme, and to edit books called TOO CUTE KITTENS, where I must determine whether or not photos are, in fact, too cute.
Working with Animal Planet on books about cute puppies and kittens is a dream come true, and if I have to spend the rest of my days at a desk, if that means I am captioning a photo of a sloth cuddling a kitten, well so be it.
I’m a fairly new Harlequin-ite, and I was a little bit nervous to leave my old position over at Penguin, where I had worked for two years. But, when I discovered one of the projects I’d be working on was Animal Planet’s TOO CUTE books, I knew this place was made for me. I mean, nothing says “awesome job” like books about animals.
I consider myself infinitely lucky to not only have a polydactyl animal familiar of my own—named Arya Stark—but also to work on animal-centric projects like the TOO CUTE series, as well as CAT DADDY by Jackson Galaxy.
Sidenote: One of the highlights of my career was walking around NYC with Jackson Galaxy and being stopped by a NYPD officer on horseback who wanted her picture taken with the star of My Cat from Hell. The horse then proceeded to eat Jackson’s croissant, right out of his hand.
Just an average day in the life of an animal book publicist. Sometimes ridiculous, sometimes exhausting, always fun.
