Life’s Better with a Little Romance: Candace Havens
I’ve been reading Harlequin romances since I was eight years old. I spent my summers with my grandma and she had boxes of them. I started out with the Harlequin Presents and I was so enthralled by the relationships and the adventure that I went through several books a week even at a young age. These people lived all over the world and they had such exciting lives while I, the ultimate city girl, was stuck on a farm all summer. (I ended up loving that farm years later, but at the time it seemed like a prison far away from all my friends at home.) Around the age of twelve, I started reading the slightly racier Harlequins, and honestly, like a lot of girls, this was one of my first lessons in the birds and the bees. (Man, I was so disappointed in those first kisses with boys. They just didn’t measure up to the heroes in my romances.)
When I decided about seven years ago to write a book I knew there had to be a romance in it. I love a happy ending. I also enjoy watching a couple fight for true love. I still give a happy sigh when I finish reading or writing a romance. The great thing about a fictional romance hero is that we can make him a little more enlightened and, perhaps, a little sexier than most of the guys we know. (Please don’t tell my husband I said that.) And my heroines often say things I never could. They are bold creatures who go after what they want in life.
I’m always surprised when I hear someone say they don’t read romance. What’s wrong with them? I mean, everyone deserves a little romance in their life.
