Sneak Preview! Get Ready to Get a Little DANGEROUS with Diana Palmer

by Tara Gavin, Senior Executive Editor

I’m so excited that Diana Palmer has written Dangerous—and that I’ve been the first person to read it (other than DP, of course)! The book is wonderfully sexy and emotional—and Kilraven is one of my favorite Diana Palmer heroes ever. I’ve been waiting for his story since he first appeared in Fearless. He just jumped out of the pages, and caught at my heart.

Dangerous is the conclusion of a mystery that Diana has had brewing in her mind for a couple of books now. There have been some violent murders in Jacobsville lately, and Kilraven, along with lovely Winnie Sinclair (remember her from Heart of Stone?),  are actively involved in trying to solve them. The investigation leads back to another unsolved cold case—the deaths of Kilraven’s own family.  There is a lot of surprises in store for Kilraven and Winnie, as well as for Diana Palmer readers! And there’s a lot of very steamy romance…

Dangerous marks a milestone for Diana Palmer. She has written over 130 stories for Harlequin, Silhouette, Mira, HQN, Luna and Steeple Hill. She has over 86 million books in print. I’ve been her editor for 26 years, and she is a joy to work with. She is a born storyteller. When I first met Diana, it was in Atlanta, many years ago. Her son Blayne was just a little boy of about seven or eight. He was so cute, but like any youngster, he began fussing a bit at the table when we were at dinner. To occupy him, Diana started to tell him a story about fish and their lives and friends in the water. Well, when she was finished with the story, I almost burst out, “What happened to the fishes then?”

A couple of weeks ago, Diana and I were talking about Dangerous and Kilraven and Winnie. She told me she started to cry when Kilraven finally came to terms with the murder of his family. It is a very emotional part of the story, and I felt deeply moved by Kilraven’s courage in facing his demons. I also told Diana that I loved how Winnie grew through the book. She is shy and gentle, and somewhat intimidated by the world, although she is an expert at her job. Through Kilraven, she learns to stand up for herself and is able to shine as she should. There is a great deal of danger that she must go through during the course of the story, and Winnie saves the day!

Within the story, too, is a twist that I think readers will enjoy. The proposed villain of the story just refused to be a villain, Diana told me. When it came time for the murderer to be revealed as she was writing it, he just said, “no, I didn’t do it.” So Diana had to go back in the story and find the real killer—which I think makes the book even more exciting. I hope that you do, too.

Diana Palmer is dedicated to her readers, as we all are here at Harlequin Books. She tries in her Dear Reader letters to thank readers for all their good wishes throughout the years. So, I hope that I can join in with Diana, and thank all of her wonderful readers, as well. Thank you for all these years of books, reading and romance!

Editor’s Note: Dangerous goes onsale at eHarlequin on June 1. ‘Til then, check out the Browse the Book widget below for a preview of Fearless, where you first meet Kilraven, which is onsale in print and ebook format today!

We Celebrated 60 Years All Year Long!

by Sulemaan Ahmed, Olga Kwak, Lori Meyers, Karen Queme, and Michelle Renaud

How do you celebrate sixty years of pure reading pleasure?  All year, of course!

And you’d better believe that we did—there were so many ways that we celebrated in 2009 that I had to enlist the help of several people to write this post.  Like all good families, we gathered together and put together a celebration of our sixty years in publishing that won’t soon be forgotten.  It took blood, sweat and tears, it filled our heads day and night, but ultimately, it was worth it.  It’s not every year you get to celebrate such a milestone, after all.  It’s hard to see how we’ll top this anniversary off, but I suppose our centennial is coming along…

And I’m sure you’re not entirely surprised.  After all, we did mention it (once or twice…).  In honour of the end of our celebrations, I’d like to take the time to show and tell you just how much celebrating we did.

Come along…

More Editors’ Suggestions for Holiday Reading

At our (almost) year end employee meeting, the editors pulled together some reading suggestions for the coming months. So if you’re looking for books to round out 2009 reading — or are building up your 2010 TBR list — check out what they had to say! ~Amy

Charles Griemsman, Associate Editor: ONE COWBOY, ONE CHRISTMAS by Kathleen Eagle (Silhouette Special Edition, December 2009)

Stranded by a snowstorm, bull rider Zach Beaudry winds up on the doorstep of Ann Drexler’s wild mustang ranch. They share a past that he doesn’t remember (she sure does, but she’s not letting on!)—and they’ll share a future they’ll never forget, if he gives up bull-riding and stays to help Sally and her sister with the challenges of the ranch. NYT author Kathleen Eagle animates this classic cowboy tale with her rich, distinctive voice.

Shana Smith, Editorial Assistant: THE SOLDIER’S SECRET DAUGHTER by Cindy Dees (Silhouette Romantic Suspense, December 2009)

Her mystery man disappeared after their one night of passion, but he left Emily Grainger with a constant reminder—their daughter. So when she receives a tip that leads her to a ship’s container, she’s shocked to discover her long-lost love held captive inside! Now on the run from his captors, Jagger Holtz will do anything to protect his newly discovered family.

I absolutely love this book! Cindy is a great writer and one of the top authors in SRS, but she has gone above and beyond in this book, which is the third and final installment in the author-led Top Secret Deliveries miniseries. When an average woman gets pulled into a world of intrigue and espionage, she discovers she’s a bit of a super-spy herself. It’s a real page-turner, full of romantic tension, high on emotion and suspense, and sprinkled with bits of humor. The heroine is plucky and relatable, the hero sexy and a bit dangerous, and their daughter just adorable. The characters are really what make this book shine. I highly recommend it.

Kelli Martin, Senior Editor: HIS PERFECT MATCH by Elaine Overton (Kimani Romance, December 2009)

This RT 4 ½ starred review is a second chance romance that reunites kindergarten teacher Liz with the man she left at the altar. Now, Liz needs Darius’ help—to save her ailing son’s life, and to heal her own heart.

I loved how heart-wrenching the emotion is. Your heart just aches seeing Liz try to get a healthy kidney for her son and you totally feel sympathy for how wounded by the broken engagement Darius is. Plus, the author reveals long-held secrets in the most surprising ways.

Krista Stroever, Senior Editor: THE MAVERICK by Diana Palmer (Silhouette Desire, December 2009)

Diana Palmer gives fan favorite Harley Fowler a book of his own—THE MAVERICK, a 4 ½ star top pick from RT. DP’s connection with her fans and their likes/dislikes is fascinating—this secondary character has appeared in many of her books and evolved over the course of them into a true hero.

Editor Tara Gavin Talks “The Morcai Battalion”

by Tara Gavin, Editor

It is such a thrill that the second installment of Susan Kyle’s science fiction trilogy THE MORCAI BATTALION is now available, exclusively in eBook format: THE MORCAI BATTALION: THE RECRUIT. And I love the fact that it is written under Diana Palmer’s real name—Susan Kyle!

I’m Susan’s editor, and we’ve worked together for twenty-five years. She is a fabulous writer and she loves romance. Readers all over the world are delighted when a new book by Diana Palmer is published. Her next book, THE MAVERICK, will be available from Silhouette Desire in December and is a new Long, Tall Texan story. And there is a lot more romance coming from Diana Palmer in 2010 and beyond.

However, the landscape of the Morcai Battalion has always been alive and percolating in her very active writer’s mind. She wrote the original THE MORCAI BATTALION before she was ever published in romance, and her dream has always been to have it reissued and to complete the MORCAI BATTALION trio.

THE MORCAI BATTALION, first published by Luna Books in December 2007, is a “space opera” and the canvas this story unfolds on is very wide and daring. I’ve fallen in love with the lead protagonists featured, too. There is the enigmatic Dtimun—an alpha hero of epic proportions and the leader of the legendary Holconcom, a military unit with startling powers…and the wonderful Lieutenant Commander Dr. Madeline Ruszel, who has been programmed not to feel love. But then what is the emotion she is overwhelmed with when in the presence of Dtimun?

The other characters grabbed hold of my heart, as well. Holt Stern and how he rises above his fate. Dr. Strick Hahnson, Madeline’s colleague and confidant. And we can’t forget Komack, the Centaurian soldier who has a mysterious and surprising background. All these characters—and so many more—make up THE MORCAI BATTALION series.

Readers have been writing in, asking about THE MORCAI BATTALION and when a new installment would be available. Susan has had fans from all over the world wondering—and she has even garnered quite a few new fans. Teenage boys have emailed her, telling her how much they’ve enjoyed THE MORCAI BATTALION.

That’s why I’m so delighted that Susan and Harlequin eBooks are publishing the second book in the series and have reissued the first book under the name Susan Kyle. Susan is dedicated to her readers, and once they told her they wanted to know what happened to these unforgettable characters, she wanted to finish out their story.

This year is Harlequin Books’s 60th Anniversary—and we’ve always kept our readers foremost in mind when presenting them with books. Our mission is to create entertaining and enriching experiences for readers to enjoy, to share, and to return to.

I hope that you enjoy THE MORCAI BATTALION: THE RECRUIT. I know that I did! Whether she is writing as Diana Palmer, or as Susan Kyle, this amazing writer delivers books that enthrall readers time and time again!
