RWA Day 4: Debbie Macomber is NOT a Writer!

She told me so herself and was very specific on this one point.  “I am a story teller” she says and yesterday’s interview with her was a total honor and a privilege and she did indeed tell me some great stories.  She also shared her secret ingredient for macaroni and cheese, told me the significance of the 1022 in the title of 1022 Evergreen Place which is her 10th Cedar Cove book (and her birth date!) and all about her third annual ‘Grandma Camp’ where she spends time cooking, shopping, knitting, practicing gratitude and swimming every day with her granddaughters.  She also shared some inside info on her upcoming Call Me Mrs. Miracle movie for HBO.   She was fresh off the set and shared a picture of herself and Doris Roberts who plays the wonderful Mrs. Miracle.  Oh, and about that secret ingredient?  Comment on the blog below and I just might share!

Then Deanna Raybourn stopped by to update us on the latest adventures of Lady Julia Grey and Nicholas Brisbane.  We most recently followed them to the exotic Himalayas in Dark Road to Darjeeling (most gorgeous book cover EVER), where Deanna introduces a dasterdly archvillain, reveals some terrifyingly delicious family secrets and then breaks our hearts with an important plot turn.  She also shared fascinating insights into life beyond the drawing rooms of the aristocracy and particularly how Nicholas defies all stereotypes of the Victorian Male.  She looked as wonderful as ever, told us her new favorite fragrance (Gypsy Water) how she really felt about the Titanic exhibit and how she manages to pack everything she needs for RWA in a 9×20x14 1/2 inch carryon and one oversize slouchy purse.  Here’s the breakdown!

The purse contains: iphone, wallet, sunglasses, folder of travel documents, chargers, netbook, two paperback books, snack, cosmetic bag, pens, TSA-approved bag o’liquids, and blank notebook.

The carry-on holds:

1 curling iron

1 toiletry bag

1 stack promotional postcards for Dark Road to Darjeeling

1 stack bookmarks for The Dead Travel Fast

1 stack business cards

1 paperback book

4 pairs of shoes: leopard stilettos, multi-color floral peep-toe heels, black faille wedges, white Jack Rogers sandals

1 thin woven wrap in leopard print

1 white bikini

1 green silk caftan for wearing in my room

1 nightgown

underwear

1 patterned mini-caftan for a bathing suit cover-up

5 clutch purses: gold leather, silver leather, black sequin, multi-color floral wristlet, raffia with white trim

6 dresses: brown linen, black lace cocktail, peacock taffeta cocktail, yellow sheath, apple green linen sheath, flame orange silk

1 black taffeta evening gown

UM, did you notice her SHOES????

Ok, now that I’ve blogged your ears off, I have to leave you with a tease, since  I have run out to the business center and pick up the entry forms for this afternoon’s draw to win a Sony Reader at the Carina Press Cocktail event that Angela James and Malle Vallik are hosting here in the Disney Dolphin.

You’ll just have to come back later on today to get the inside scoop on Brenda Jackson’s exciting new project, how Maria V. Snyder made me cry and all about Brenda Novak’s Department 6!

Dispatches from Our Fearless eHarlequin Community Manager at RWA!

One of my favorite things about attending the RWA National conference is walking around the hotel and author spotting.  You NEVER know who you’ll run into!

Why, just this morning I ran into author Robyn Carr with her editor as they were heading to breakfast and a chat.   We talked about her Virgin River books and her video, and how she’s busy working on the next installment of everyone’s favorite town in California and of course, as she said, everyone’s favorite MEN.

I then ran downstairs to see if I could grab my registration kit, but sadly they weren’t open yet, however I did manage to grab a couple of snaps of some posters and banners featuring Debbie Macomber

Debbie is this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award, otherwise known as the Nora Roberts award.  And imagine our delight in seeing Carina Press displayed so prominently on the water bottles included in the registrants swag bags!

As Amy likes to say, “Oooh, shiny!”

I’m spending today shooting author videos with Courtney Milan, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Sharon Sala and Heather Graham and I’ll be sure to update later on today with pics and anecdotes.  The hotel is FREEZING cold and outside is incredibly hot, so much so that my camera completely fogged when I nipped out to try to grab some snaps of the architecture here at the Disney Dolphin, so you’ll have to make do with inside pics.

See you later!

Get Your Vote On!

by Karen Queme, Manager, Digital Marketing

In late April, we launched The Gift of a Second Chance contest to tie in with the theme of Debbie Macomber’s latest book, Hannah’s List.

We received thousands of submissions from old and new fans of Debbie, who all expressed what they would do with another chance, whether it be at love, school, work or family.

The submission deadline was on May 29th and a list of 10 (our finalist list) was selected by Debbie Macomber herself! She was definitely touched but all of the entries.

We are now in the voting phase of our contest. Our 10 finalist submissions ranges from going back to school, helping out family members and students in their community. Now, I don’t want to give it all away, so check out the contest site, read the entries and vote for your favorite today!

By the way, our instant win game is still on! Visit every day to vote for your favorite finalist, and while you’re there, play our instant win game for a chance to win a copy of Hannah’s List.

Introducing Harlequin’s Big Summer Reads!

By Emma Cunningham, Production Coordinator, Digital & Internet

Oh, Summer. Long days, warm weather—is there a better way to enjoy the heat than lounging with a book by the pool or on the beach?  If you can’t tell from our brand-new Harlequin Blog Summer layout, we don’t think so.

At Harlequin, we’re all crazy bookworms who spend our working and pleasure time immersed in books and romance (we know you’re super jealous, and no, you can’t have our jobs!) We frequently get sidetracked from producing books by talking about recent releases we love.  We were doing exactly that when we got the idea to put together a list of our favorite Summer 2010 books. We picked some old favorites that we’re reissuing and a bunch of fresh, new voices, and wound up with an eclectic list of contemporary romance, paranormal, and everything in between. And so Big Summer Reads was born.

Now that we had an exciting program like Big Summer Reads, we had to think of the best possible way to get it out there.  And you know what we love besides reading outside in the sun? Bloggers. In fact, we love them so much, that we’ve put together a massive and still growing database of book blogs and we’re sending out a selection of ebooks from our Big Summer Reads list for review. Some lucky bloggers will even get some fancy prizes to help readers enjoy their summer reading experience even more!

Here are some of the Big Summer Reads books that we’re e-mailing out to bloggers:

Linda Lael Miller – McKettricks of Texas: Garrett

Susan Andersen – Skintight

Marie Ferrarella – Finding Happily-Ever-After

Brenda Jackson – Star of His Heart

Victoria Dahl – Crazy for Love

Susan Mallery – Almost Perfect

Susan Grant – Sureblood

Kristan Higgins – All I Ever Wanted

Debbie Macomber – Orchard Valley Brides

Debbie Macomber – Orchard Valley Grooms

Susan Wiggs, Susan Mallery, Sherryl Woods – Summer Brides (The Borrowed Bride, Fireside, Harbor Lights, Accidentally Yours)

Robyn Carr – The House on Olive Street

Just a sample of what you can find in the Big Summer Reads program

So, to sum it all up, look for the Big Summer Reads featured on your favorite blog soon. And if you’re a blogger yourself, don’t hesitate to give me a shout and I’ll happily send some free books for review your way, too.
