Sensible, shy English rose Jodie can’t forget her sinful encounter with Italian billionaire Antonio Cavalli. Convinced this dazzling playboy won’t give her a second thought, she fled the next morning. Now all she wants is to return home to England and nurse her broken heart. But first she must face waitressing a party in the Pellegrini castello …where Antonio is a guest!
Antonio was hooked on Jodie after just one steamy night. And he’s not about to let his Cinderella run away a second time. So, trapped together in the castello’s elevator, Antonio seizes the opportunity to show Jodie just how far their powerful connection could take them: from one wild night to wedding vows!
Jodie smoothed her too-short skirt then took a deep breath and lifted the tray of fluted glasses filled with champagne. Approximately two hundred people were chatting noisily in Castello Miniato’s newly renovated stateroom, hoovering up the alcohol as if worried there was a shortage.
Fixing a smile on her face, she weaved her way through the other waiting staff collecting their own silver trays to take out and silently cursed the server who’d cried off sick at the last minute, necessitating Jodie to squeeze herself into a uniform a size too small and get out there to do the job herself.
This was a hugely important occasion. The latest Pellegrini heir to inherit the medieval castello was undertaking a much-needed renovation project, and this party was to celebrate the opening of the refurbished north wing, the part of the reputedly haunted castello that would be hired out for functions and to corporations. Many of Europe’s richest and most powerful people were in attendance tonight, but that wasn’t the reason Jodie had agreed to help out when she should be in her bedroom packing. Serena, her mother’s Italian sister-in-law, ran the castello for Pieta Pellegrini and had organised the whole party. If things went wrong, it would be Serena’s head on the chopping block.
She owed her aunt so much. Serena had taken a punt on her newly graduated niece, flown her to Italy to take the job of her assistant and opened her home to her. Jodie would not let her down tonight, even if she would much rather be anywhere else than here.
Keeping tight hold of her tray, she took her designated position next to one of the stateroom’s marble pillars, ready for anyone close at hand who wanted a fresh champagne to swipe one of the flutes. Three flutes were taken in quick succession, without a word or look of acknowledgement. It amazed her how the black skirt and white blouse made her invisible. These people didn’t see her. All they saw was the champagne on the tray. But it didn’t make her invisible to him.
She’d felt his eyes on her ever since he’d arrived thirty minutes ago. Antonio Cavalli. The man Jodie had hoped to escape this country without ever seeing again.
For all her good intentions, she couldn’t stop her eyes seeking him out. They would be drawn to him regardless. It wasn’t just his good looks and tall, well-built frame that automatically drew the eye, but the magnetism he exuded. It rippled from him. She’d never met anyone like him and fervently hoped never to again. Her heart wouldn’t be able to take it.
He’d brought a date with him.
If she hadn’t already known she’d been right to walk away then that one action would have cinched it.
But now he’d abandoned his date, and those long, muscular legs were striding towards her…
