Celebrate 35 Years of Special Edition with RaeAnne Thayne
by RaeAnne Thayne
I have been reading (and adoring!) romance novels since I was eleven years old and would sneak them out of my mom’s closet. I adored the Mills & Boon and Harlequin Presents romances, and loved experiencing what it was like to live on an Australian cattle station, have a holiday in the Cotswolds, and float the Grand Canal in Venice with a handsome Italian count.
Still, I yearned to read romances set in places and communities more familiar to me. That’s why I was so thrilled when I discovered the Special Edition line. These instantly became my favorites and I read every single book, from the very beginning. All my favorite authors wrote for it – Nora Roberts, Victoria Pade, Sheryl Woods, Christine Rimmer.
When I decided I wanted to try writing a romance novel, I yearned to write the kind of story I loved, about real people going through every day struggles to find their happy endings. I wanted to write for Special Edition!
My career took a few twists and turns and I had already been published for a decade and had written nearly 20 books before I finally had my chance. The day my first Special Edition, Light the Stars, was released in 20o6 was one of the happiest of my writing career!
I love SEs more than ever now. I love the emotion, the focus on families and communities, the wonderful writers.
I write other kinds of books in addition to Specials now, for my Hope’s Crossing and Haven Point series. I love the other stories, but each time I start writing another Special Edition, I always feel the cozy, kick-off-your-shoes comfort of coming home.
