Read a snippet of “Plain Stalker”:

Georgia Summers stepped behind a curtain of one of the bays in the ER not because she had to check on the elderly gentleman, but because she needed to catch her breath. The cacophony of sounds was scraping against her every last nerve.

Two more hours and her shift would be over, and she had one glorious week of vacation ahead of her. Most people didn’t take a vacation in January in Buffalo without plans to travel, but Georgia was looking forward to hunkering down to read and binge watch all the favorite TV shows she had missed while working back-to-back doubles covering for her coworkers who had family they wanted to spend Christmas with.

She closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath. Dear Lord, help me get through these last couple hours. She glanced over at the gentleman lying in the bed, and he stared at her with a question in his eyes.

“Are you okay, Mr. Petrowski?”

“I’ve been better. When are you going to spring me from here?”

“We’re going to admit you for more tests.”

“More tests.” The elderly man sounded defeated. “Sounds expensive.”

Georgia patted the bed rail and gave him a reassuring smile. “Shouldn’t be long now before you’re moved to a room upstairs.”

Mr. Petrowski sighed heavily. Her heart sank. Truth be told, Georgia had no idea how long it would be. That was one of the hardest parts about working in the ER of a hospital in a major city. Once Georgia provided the emergency care her patients needed, she sent them on their way without ever knowing anything about their long-term care. Of course, unless they bounced back into the ER.

Wasn’t this what she’d wanted when she went back to school to become a physician assistant? This was what she wanted, right? To help people. So, why did she feel so drained?

She stepped out from behind the curtain. Claire, one of the admitting nurses, ran toward her. “There you are!” The alarm in her eyes sent Georgia’s nerves buzzing. So much for her little breather.
