Cover Spotlight: The Darkest Touch by Gena Showalter
Want to know what goes into the making of a sexy Gena Showalter cover? Here’s a behind the scenes look at how the cover for The Darkest Touch was made!
by Kathleen Outdit, Art Director
We selected from nearly 500 images taken at our photo shoot with photographer Glenn Mackay based on the original concept design by Tara Scarcello. This chosen shot captured the character’s intensity and physique – and was beautifully lit.
Torin is depicted by Justin Howell, an actor, stuntman and model from Toronto, Ontario.
Next we added the signature Lords of the Underworld butterfly tattoo
We then exaggerated the lighting effects to highlight the models muscles and create a dramatic mood.
A smokey atmosphere was built into the scene. It gives the scene depth and also created the dark background need to contrast the type design
The iconic butterfly form again adds some depth and texture to the scene, but is also an important symbol for the Lords of the Underworld series
After creating an illustration – we need to create a cover! The artwork is placed into a layout grid as the front cover. Additoonal illustrations using the smokey textures are created for the spine and back cover art.
The (text) type is designed over the artwork. Crafting the text design can take as much care as the artwork!
Once the cover art is complete and approved, we mark up all of the decorating elements and send it to the printer!
So what did Gena Showalter have to say about the cover of her upcoming book? Well…
“Seeing the cover for the first time, my thought process went something like this: Muscles. Gloves are off. Muscles. Drool–must wipe it away. Muscles. Oh, this man also has a face. Handsome! Muscles. 😉 ”
