Although I don’t listen to anything with lyrics when I’m writing, sometimes I’ll be doing my thing somewhere else, hear a song, and go, “Yeah, that’s totally [insert character here].” In a fit of contemporaneous creativity, here’s what I think of when I imagine the characters from The St. Croix Chronicles.
Cherry St. Croix
What She Likes: Cherry isn’t into music as a rule; I dread the day she ever found out what a rave was! If she had to pin something down, she’d gravitate towards music guaranteed to make Fanny lose her mind.
What She Is: Adam Lambert – Trespassing
With lyrics like “No Trespassing”, yeah, my ass! Wait ‘til they get a load of me!”, and some none too subtle references to tripping and dreams and losing one’s mind, it’s only natural that all of Adam Lambert’s bravado be tailor made for Cherry’s natural state of mind.
What He Likes: If given his choice on the matter, Hawke’s favorite music is anything with a gut-deep beat and pulse; I dread the day he ever found out what a rave was—he’d be running his own within days.
What He Is: Robbie Williams – Let Me Entertain You
As the Midnight Menagerie’s ringmaster, he’s seen it all: from the glitterati who tarnish to black in his own pleasure garden, and the rougher sorts who come to sate their own needs. It’s not his business if you’re married, virginal, or otherwise—what matters is your entertainment. None but the darkest of hearts leaves the Menagerie unsatisfied.
What She Likes: Zylphia spends a lot of time surrounded by people. Counter to that noise, her favorite music is simplistic and often Zen in nature, such as quiet flutes or even monastic bells.
What She Is: Katzenjammer – Hey Ho (On the Devil’s Back)
We don’t know a lot about Zylphia yet, but we know that she comes from “a useful heritage” and seems to know an awful lot about, well, an awful lot. She’s a midnight sweet, which means she’s no stranger to selling herself. I’ll let this stand with a knowing wink.
What He Likes: Symphonies of the masters! Ashmore is no slouch when it comes to creative expression, and the more complex a score is, the more it speaks to him. It doesn’t matter if it’s classical, rock, pop, or country; if it’s complicated, he’s got an ear for it.
What He Is: Parlor Mob – Holding On
Cherry’s mysterious and absent guardian has his work cut out for him. What do we know about him? Even less than we know about Zylphia! Who is he? Why was he named executor of the St. Croix estate? …What is he holding on for? Keep reading The St. Croix Chronicles to find out.
Where’s Our Wastrels?
Once you read The Mysterious Case of Mr. Strangeway, I hope you’ll come by to tell me what music you’d associate with the titular Mr. Strangeway and his cohort, Captain Smoot. I haven’t come up anything for them, yet!
About the Book
The Mysterious Case of Mr. Strangeway by Karina Cooper
A St. Croix Chronicles novella
Although I have only been part of Society for two years, I am already desperate to escape its confines and eager for adventure. The world my deceased parents have left me is nothing more than a gilded prison, and I will do anything to escape the boredom, even become a collector of bounties.
My name is Cherry St. Croix, and I may be young, but I am old enough to know when I am in over my head. My first collection seemed easy: Mr. Strangeway’s debts have come due, and the purse for his capture is hefty. Yet the wastrel remains one step ahead of me, and my efforts are hampered by another collector after the same coin. What’s more, a simple hunt becomes the forefront of a conspiracy that leads me on a chase through London’s low-class streets.
Not only does my pride demand success, but the well-being of many rests upon the choices I make–failure is not an outcome I can live with.
