How to Hide Your Characters in Plain Sight
by Heather Graham, author of Keeper of the Night (Book One in The Keepers: LA from Harlequin Nocturne)
The Keepers miniseries began with Deb LeBlanc, Alexandra Sokoloff and me tossing around ideas. Before we knew it, the first Keepers trilogy was born.
The miniseries is based on the concept that there’s another world–the world of the Others–that exists around us; we just don’t know it. Thinking along the lines of “hide in plain sight”, we chose New Orleans. When we came to the second go-round, Alexandra Sokoloff, Harley Jane Kozak and I began to think about another city where someone…different could blend in. It came to us all in one breath: L.A.!
When Harley, Alex and I met, it was like meeting friends we’d had our whole lives. We’re different and we’re alike–just like the cousins in this miniseries. So often a writer operates alone. Sitting around a table with my friends, throwing out ideas, was so much fun I felt guilty calling it work.
We hope you’ll enjoy our world as much as we enjoyed creating it. Harley, who’s also an actress, and Alex, with a background in screenwriting, provided the inside scoop on the movie business. Then we added the scary, the impossible, the bizarre, and came up with our own version of L.A.
There will be four Keepers: L.A. books, and Christmas has brought a Keepers anthology set in Salem, MA–featuring me, Deb LeBlanc back again, and my dear friends Beth Ciotta and Kathleen Pickering.
What a present–working with people I love to write books I hope you’ll love.
New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham kicked off the series with her free digital prequel story, THE GATEKEEPER, and book one this month, KEEPER OF THE NIGHT for Harlequin Nocturne. You can purchase both on Harlequin.com.
