Preparing for a Live Event
by Susan Mallery, author of the new Fools Gold series
Where: Harlequin Facebook page on September 1 at 3pm ET/ 12pm PT

I’m a writer. Being a writer always sounded very glamorous to me until I actually began working as a writer. Don’t get me wrong – I adore what I do. But glamorous? Most days, I wear faded jeans that are a couple sizes too big and a T-shirt that is faded and soft after thousands of cycles through the laundry. Don’t judge me, they’re comfortable! My hair is always clean but rarely “done,” and I don’t bother with make-up unless I have plans for after I finish my pages for the day. I don’t even open the door for delivery men, lest I scare them.

A few times a year, I have to – gasp! – present myself in public. As much as I love seeing my readers, the prospect of being seen causes some anxiety in me. I’m not particularly shy. I just don’t know what to wear. I can’t wear the same thing every time. If readers kept seeing pictures of me in the same outfit over and over again, they’d start to take up a collection for me. (I really do have the most warm-hearted readers!)

On September 1 at 3 p.m., I’m doing a live video chat at Harlequin Facebook. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be chatting with my editor, Tara Parsons, and we’ll take questions from viewers like you. Please join us! We’ll talk about my latest release, ONLY YOURS, which comes out on August 30, and about whatever you want to talk about!

With the video event, I only have to worry about what to wear from the waist up. If only I had a fabulous top that no one has seen me in before!

This is why, whenever a new event is scheduled, I’m forced to shop for clothes. I love the mall, but more for skin care products and, say, movies than for clothes. If I had a personal shopper, I’d enjoy it a lot more, but on my own I feel as unsure as a seventh-grader. Helplessly, I ask the salespeople, “Does this go with this?” If I ask often enough and with just the right tremor in my voice, they sometimes take pity on me. I adore those saleswomen who let me stay in the dressing room as they bring me outfit after outfit to try on.

I also have to worry about my makeup. I’ve done some TV morning shows, and no matter how much makeup I feel I’ve caked on, I tend to look washed out next to the perky morning show hostess. The Livestream event will be filmed at my home office. No studio lights. Does that mean I should use more makeup? Less makeup?

If for no other reason than to see what I decided to wear, and whether I applied the perfect amount of makeup, mark your calendar for September 1 at 3 p.m. You know you’re curious!

Stop by the Harlequin Facebook page on September 1 at 3pm ET/ 12pm PT for a LIVE VIDEO EVENT with author Susan Mallery. She’ll be chatting with her editor Tara Parsons and answering questions from her fans. There will also be a special appearance by the Fool’s Gold Varsity Cheerleaders! Send Susan a Question you dying to know the answer to! Submit your questions by midnight PST Aug 30th to this address: HarlequinLive@Harlequin.ca

Susan will answer the top questions during the Live Event!

  1. Jeanette, Thank you! If you can’t catch the live video chat, you should be able to watch it online after the event. I’ll post a link on my Facebook page and on my website.

  2. I wanted to tell you how much Beach Lane has touched me. I am about 3/4 thru it and it brings me to tears ( and smiles everyday). I volunteer with Susan G Komen – Breast Cancer, and my Mom is a survivor, but until this book I don’t think I have really understood what it is like to have cancer or to be that person’s spouse. You did a wonderful job telling this story.

  3. Debbie, BEACH LANE is by the fabulous Sherryl Woods. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! She writes lovely, emotionally gripping stories.

You know, next year, I’m launching a women’s fiction series, beginning with BAREFOOT SEASON in April 2012. Since you enjoyed Beach Lane, I think you’ll like it. I hope you’ll watch out for it!

  4. Patricia Cendrowski ( Patty)

I just love your books. You are one of the best writers around. I do have a few other favorites too. Your all so good I have a hard time picking just one. But trust me you are in the top 5. I say that meaning that all 5 of you are my favorite authors. I drive my kids nuts when they ask who my favorite author is and name off all 5 of you, Trust me you are in great company with Betty Neels, Debbie Macomber, Janet Daily, and Linda Lael Miller. Don’t get me wrong therre are many authors that I like and you should see my bedroom shelves with all the books I have. I even have to get 2 more book cases to stretch them out further and to allow for more. I love books as a matter of fact the first ones I bought that got me hoooked on you the Sweet Talk, Sweet Trouble Sweet spot series. Then you were suddenly in my top 5. My younger daughter reads these books too as much as I do. My older one does some. But the younger one keeps telling me she is going abscound with those books when I’m not looking. Then she laughs. But I know if she could sneak them out of my home she would to reread over and over again as I have. I’ve done that with many of my books, I have books double stacked in front of each other and on top. That is why I have to get 2 more book cases at least for now. I won’t be able to see your live video chat on that day cause that is when I am getting some of the rest of my furniture for my new home that includes those new book cases. As a matter of fact I just bought another one of yours to one of your other series. But how I wish I could. Hopefully I will get to see you another time. It would mean so much to me. Wish you best on your video chat and don’t worry about how you look. I know you will look just fine. After all we’re your fans and we will be fine with what ever you wear. Shoot I wear the same things when I’m at home. But then don’t most of us. From one of your most loyal fans, Patty

  5. Patty,

Thank you so much!!! Wow, I am very honored to be on that list. You’ve named some of my favorites, too. I’m thrilled that you discovered me, and thank you so much for introducing me to your daughters, as well.

Congratulations on your new house! That’s so exciting… especially the part about the bookshelves.

You know, even if you can’t watch the live video event, feel free to submit your questions to HarlequinLive@Harlequin.ca. You have until midnight tonight to send them in!

  6. Hello,
I’m a big fan and love The fool’s gold books their the best. Reading you can go any where and do anything and you don’t have to leave the house. Ha ha almost like the internet.
Me I’m a Jeans and a nice blouse with my hair and makeup kind of girl.
I hate dress pants! Not big on dresses either I have a few but never wear them!
When buying clothes look at magazines or catalog and copy that look as close as possible and for cheaper! Just be yourself! I don’t like to answer my door either unless I know it my mom or something. My mom and I are very close!
