Preparing for a Live Event

I’m a writer. Being a writer always sounded very glamorous to me until I actually began working as a writer. Don’t get me wrong – I adore what I do. But glamorous? Most days, I wear faded jeans that are a couple sizes too big and a T-shirt that is faded and soft after thousands of cycles through the laundry. Don’t judge me, they’re comfortable! My hair is always clean but rarely “done,” and I don’t bother with make-up unless I have plans for after I finish my pages for the day. I don’t even open the door for delivery men, lest I scare them.
A few times a year, I have to – gasp! – present myself in public. As much as I love seeing my readers, the prospect of being seen causes some anxiety in me. I’m not particularly shy. I just don’t know what to wear. I can’t wear the same thing every time. If readers kept seeing pictures of me in the same outfit over and over again, they’d start to take up a collection for me. (I really do have the most warm-hearted readers!)
On September 1 at 3 p.m., I’m doing a live video chat at Harlequin Facebook. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be chatting with my editor, Tara Parsons, and we’ll take questions from viewers like you. Please join us! We’ll talk about my latest release, ONLY YOURS, which comes out on August 30, and about whatever you want to talk about!
With the video event, I only have to worry about what to wear from the waist up. If only I had a fabulous top that no one has seen me in before!
This is why, whenever a new event is scheduled, I’m forced to shop for clothes. I love the mall, but more for skin care products and, say, movies than for clothes. If I had a personal shopper, I’d enjoy it a lot more, but on my own I feel as unsure as a seventh-grader. Helplessly, I ask the salespeople, “Does this go with this?” If I ask often enough and with just the right tremor in my voice, they sometimes take pity on me. I adore those saleswomen who let me stay in the dressing room as they bring me outfit after outfit to try on.
I also have to worry about my makeup. I’ve done some TV morning shows, and no matter how much makeup I feel I’ve caked on, I tend to look washed out next to the perky morning show hostess. The Livestream event will be filmed at my home office. No studio lights. Does that mean I should use more makeup? Less makeup?
If for no other reason than to see what I decided to wear, and whether I applied the perfect amount of makeup, mark your calendar for September 1 at 3 p.m. You know you’re curious!
