The Weight of the Great

by Adam Wilson, Associate Editor, MIRA and Harlequin Teen

I was asked to this lovely space to write something to you all about Heather Gudenkauf’s breakout debut novel, THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE. But, really, what else remains for me to say about this book? The people have already spoken… and they love it!

If you judge by sales, it’s sold a kazillion copies and been on the New York Times list forever. If by critical reception, it’s garnered praise from every corner: book clubs, authors, reviewers, editors, astronauts, the literate among the unicorns.

Of course, none of those things will tell you precisely why a book’s so popular with readers. To be honest, nobody in publishing can entirely predict what will take off and what won’t.  (If we could, wouldn’t every book be atop the list?) What we are left with, then, is the task of figuring out why any particularly successful book resonates as well as it does with readers.

I read THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE when it first began being passed around the office, pre-acquisition, when those who first discovered it realized we had something special. As a life-long fan of William Faulkner, I personally enjoyed TWOS (as we’ve been playfully abbreviating it in emails) for its multiple, sometimes fractured, p.o.v.s and how those things set the stage (and embody it) for a suspenseful, tale of lurking danger and family treachery.  (I love the woods! Family treachery is less fun, if it’s your own.)

I like to think that people enjoy Heather’s work for the sheer quality of her writing. No doubt many do. But equally compelling are the book’s insights into the nature of family dynamics, functional and dysfunctional, its observance of the pressures of an uncertain and confusing world upon our children, and—let’s definitely not forget—its page-gripping mystery.

Child-abduction, selective mutism, trauma, the woods—these are all gripping topics for any reader, and TWOS has them, great ‘hooks’ as the marketers amongst us might say. But without the delicate hand of a writer like Heather, they might as well be bullet points in some Power Point meeting.  What our splendid Heather Gudenkauf does is take a story with innumerable “whats” and through her skill and thoughtfulness delivers us with a tale filled with “hows” and “whys”—she links together what might otherwise be mere plot points into something greater: a story with the texture of humanity.

What a texture, and what a story! When you pick up a book like this you get the best of escapism and real-life experience. And that, IMHO, is what great books are all about: leaving your land for a well-wrought other, and bringing something back to share with your friends.

Have a great holiday season, and take care everyone. And read a book, durn it!

Joseph Teller Wins Nero Award

by Malle Vallik, Digital Team

We’re very excited to announce that The Tenth Case by Joseph Teller has won the Nero Award, a very prestigious award in the mystery and thriller community. It is judged by an expert panel and given to only one book per year.

The Tenth Case is the first book in the author’s Jaywalker series of legal thrillers and is followed by Bronx Justice and Depraved Indifference. The next book in the series, Overkill, will be published in August 2010.

You can listen to a podcast with Joseph Teller discussing his inspiration and own background that influenced The Tenth Case.

Congratulation to Joseph!

Lady Jane’s Salon, Here I Come…

by Brenda Chin, Senior Editor, Blaze

I’d heard about Lady Jane’s Salon, New York City’s first (and only) monthly reading series celebrating romance fiction, from my Blaze author, Hope Tarr.  What a great concept!   It reminded me a lot of NYC’s Algonquin Round Table, where the “Who’s Who” of the early 1900s would come and discuss all things literary.  Still, I never dreamed I’d ever get a chance to check out an event like this myself.

But I did.  And it was so cool!

If you’re lucky enough to be in New York City on the first Monday of the month from 7-9 PM, the meet-up time for the Salon, plan on seeing red—lots and lots and lots of red.  In keeping with its Salon theme, Lady Jane’s convenes not at a library or conference room but at a bar in the city’s trendy Soho area.  Madame X bills itself as New York’s sexiest lounge—and is it ever!  (I was even a little startled—and I edit Blaze!) Think Victorian antiques, cushions, beaded lampshades, and artwork that definitely pushes the envelope on erotic.  And everything is done in the sinfully delicious scarlet red of a Blaze cover—what’s not to love?

Lady Jane’s Salon is the brain child of romance authors Hope Tarr, Leanna Renee Hieber and Maya Rodale and book-blogger, Ron Hogan.  It launched in February 2009, and quickly became the talk of the town after getting press from The New York Post and Time Out New York.  And the best part of it all?    Proceeds from admission—$5 at the door or one gently-used paperback romance novel—support Share-the-Love.org,  an organization which reaches out to groups serving women-in-transition.  I was proud to find out that a recent generous donation from Harlequin enabled the charity to further extend its work with women in domestic violence shelters and halfway houses.  Way to go, Harlequin!

The December 7th Salon included a celebration of Harlequin’s 60th anniversary as well as the winter holidays.  And the place was packed–literally standing room only!  The crowd was a mix of romance readers, publishing industry professionals, and writers, both published and aspiring.

Ladies indulge in a little champagne at Lady Jane’s Salon.

First up on stage was Stacey Agdern.  Stacey reviews romance novels for Barbara Vey’s Beyond Her Book blog on PW and Manga and graphic novels for Romantic Times. She read a few portions from her charming new work, REDEDICATION, a romantic story set at Hanukkah.

Then Hope Tarr read from her Harlequin Blaze Historical, TWELVE NIGHTS.  Set in medieval Scotland during the Twelve Days of Christmas, TWELVE NIGHTS is the sequel to BOUND TO PLEASE, the launch book for Blaze’s Historical miniseries. (Trust me–this book is fantastic!  If you haven’t read it yet, you’re definitely missing out.)

Melissa Endlich, Senior Editor of Love Inspired and Allison Lyons, Editor of Intrigue with audience members.

Next up was well…me.  I recapped the highlights of Harlequin’s 60th anniversary—the cover art retrospective held in Chelsea to coincide with Book Expo America in June, CEO Donna Hayes’s appearance on “Night Line,” as well as all the sampling initiatives we’ve had this year.  Oh, and of course, all the free stuff we’ve given away (calendars, notepads, bags with vintage covers, etc.)

Once I was done, I thought I’d be able to make a quick exit off the stage (talk about pressure!), but the founders of the Salon weren’t finished with me yet.   My fellow editors from the New York office—Melissa Endlich, Allison Lyons, Gail Chasen, and Susan Litman—got the chance to come up and join me.  Then we found ourselves serenaded with a great big “Happy Birthday, Harlequin” and toasted with champagne.

It was an evening to remember, and a great tribute to our spectacular 60th Anniversary.  I’d definitely go back— though hopefully I won’t have to wait another sixty years….

Debbie Macomber Appearing on Daytime!

by Olga Kwak, blogger, sister, daughter.

What are you doing right now?  Do you have the television on?  Go turn it on!  Debbie Macomber is appearing live on DAYTIME, a nationally syndicated morning talk show.  Check your local listings, as they say!

Debbie will be talking about her new book, THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS, and showing Lindsay, Dave and Cyndi how to make some cookies from her CEDAR COVE COOKBOOK.   I hope she plans on making those Christmas cookies I mentioned on National Cookie Day.

And, in case it’s slipped your mind, THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS and THE CEDAR COVE COOKBOOK are available for sale in our bookstore.

The Harlequin Blog’s New Winter Look & Take a Cowboy (T-Shirt) Home Contest Winner!

by Olga Kwak, blogger & keeper of the Wordpress themes.

Well, I hear tell of snow out in the wide world, but we’re getting more rain and slush than big fat snowflakes in Toronto. To get us into the proper mood I’m switching the Harlequin blog over to the winter theme.

If you’re receiving this in an RSS reader, thank you for subscribing to our feed, but you won’t be able to see the lovely winter background. Might I suggest you click here.

Now that it’s up, I’m finally in the mood to buy presents.  I know, I’m a little behind, but malls kind of scare me.  I really am more of the shopping-online kind of gal.  Do you have a gift on your wish list that you’ll be thrilled to find underneath your Christmas tree?  Maybe a new eBook reader perhaps?  I know that’s definitely on MY list!

Speaking of lists, I’ve gone through our comments for the Take a Cowboy (T-Shirt) Home contest and through a careful scientific (i.e. our awesome random number generator), we’ve selected Emily R. as our winner!  Congratulations to you!

Big Fish Games and Harlequin Presents Team Up!

by Amanda Thiessen, Assistant Product Manager, Core Series

Wow!  This is so exciting—did you know that you can now go online and interact with your favorite Harlequin Presents characters?  That’s right; Harlequin Presents has teamed up with Big Fish Games to bring you the first ever Harlequin Presents online interactive game!  You can go to www.bigfishgames.com/harlequin to try a free one hour trial of the all-new game Harlequin Presents: Hidden Object of Desire.

This game is based off the popular Royal House of Karedes miniseries, where two islands have been divided by the Stefani diamond. They must come together to mend this diamond and their future bond as a country.  Hidden Object of Desire allows you to follow a few key characters through their journey; with your help in finding many key items along the way you will help bring these islands together again.

I have to say from experience this game can be quite addicting, so make sure you have lots of time on hand for when you decide to purchase this game.  There are a ton of fun puzzles and mazes, plus lots of items to find that have been hidden within a variety of settings. Check out these screenshots:

Are there other online games you love to play?  We’d love to hear about them.
